Chapter 498 Right Into the Trap

Silence stretched across the valley for about half a minute.

Then, one by one, the scattered cluckoo Chickens began picking their cautious, tentative way back

The first to return was a magnificent rooster, his plumage a blazing weave of gold and crimson, the long trailing feathers of his tail catching the sunlight and throwing it back in brilliant, metallic arcs.

He stretched his neck forward and swept his gaze from side to side, advancing one measured step at a time toward the funnel’s gleaming mouth.

Olivia pressed both hands hard over her mouth, battling the very physical urge to make a sound.

Tyson smiled, and threaded through that smile was a particular brand of knowing, self-satisfied delight that said very clearly. “T knew you’d react exactly like this

“We had the exact same reaction when we were catching the crabs.” He tilted his head toward the funnet. “Ma’am used fruit juice to bait them in. Those Crackshell Crabs went absolutely frantic for it. We couldn’t have stopped them if we’d tried.”

Olivia opened her mouth.

“Fruit juice?” she said. “Just fruit juice?”

“Just fruit juice,” Tyson confirmed.

Olivia looked down at the bottle of strawberry juice still sitting in her hand, the ohe Ella had given her at lunch, the one she’d been too fond of to finish and had tucked carefully into her pocket.

She turned it over in her palms, studying it from every conceivable angle, genuinely searching its label for answers.

“What on earth is in this juice?”

Tyson considered the question for a moment. “Best guess? It’s just that good. Good enough to make absolutely no distinction between humans and wildlife.”

Olivia stared at him for a beat, then laughed despite herself. “That is the least scientific explanation I’ve ever heard.”

“It’s also accurate,” Tyson said. “You couldn’t stop eating at lunch either.”

Olivia had absolutely nothing to say to that.

Felix leaned in from beside her. “So wait. The Crackshell Crabs that hunted us for three straight days and nights…” He paused. “They weren’t actually being aggressive. They were just hungry?”

Tyson glanced at him. “That’s one way to put it.”

Felix went very quiet.

He thought about those three days. The relentless chase. His mech suit cracking apart under those massive claws. The leg injury that still ached. The moments where he’d been genuinely, coldly certain he was going to die out there.

And those creatures had been doing all of that not out of ferocity, but out of sheer, uncomplicated craving.

Something small and wounded stirred in his chest.

Olivia reached over and patted his shoulder with firm, cheerful solidarity.

“Don’t dwell on it. Those crabs are ours now. We’ll get our revenge the delicious way.”

Felix looked at her, and then, slowly, nodded.

“I want mine butter-basted,” he said.

Rocket supplied from just behind them, “Cajun’s better.”

Elizabeth turned around and pressed one finger to her lips in a sharp, pointed gesture.

Everyone snapped their mouths shut at once and swung their attention back to the valley.

The Cluckoo Chickens were still filing in, steady and orderly and completely enchanted, one after another after another.

The great gold-and-crimson rooster was long gone, and now a white hen was making her way inside at the head of a wavering, peeping retinue of chicks.

One of the smallest got into difficulty halfway down the slope, its tiny legs scrabbling uselessly against the smooth surface, its distressed little chirps cutting sharply through the quiet.

Elizabeth’s brow furrowed. She rose, crossed to the pipe in a few brisk strides, crouched beside it, and gave the struggling chick a firm, cecisive nudge with two fingers.

“Keep moving, little one. You’re holding up the line.”

The chick’s wings beat in a brief, frantic flutter as it skidded the rest of the way down and disappeared inside.

Elizabeth gave a satisfied nod, stood, and returned to her spot.

Olivia watched the entire exchange, and for a long moment, the world felt faintly, wonderfully surreal around the edges.

“Clara,” she murmured, barely above a breath. “Pinch me.”

Clara didn’t pinch her. She just kept her gaze fixed on the funnel, her eyes luminous and quietly radiant.

“Ms. Schofield really is something extraordinary.”

Olivia nodded with deep, wordless conviction.

Tyson added from beside them, with the unhurried pride of a man who’d known this all along, “The produce from our farm is genuinely the finest thing in the known universe. It’s not just good for people. Every living creature responds to it. Those Crackshell Crabs and these Cluckoo Chickens clearly know quality when they encounter it.”

Olivia exhaled softly, something wistful and philosophical moving through her expression. “Honestly? If you have to be caught, at

ходу least let it be for something this magnificent.”

Elizabeth caught that last remark and turned to look back at her with a smile that carried warmth and something else entirely layered beneath it, something private and amused and belonging only to her.

Because what was drawing those creatures in wasn’t simply the sweetness of the juice or the richness of the corn.

It was the spiritual energy woven into them, the living vitality that saturated every last thing grown on that farm.

That was the real irresistible force. The kind that made no distinction whatsoever between the wise and the wild.
