Clearing a battlefield was genuinely her favorite part of the whole business.
After Elizabeth had given Olivia permission, Olivia forgot all about her injuries on the spot and dragged Rocket along with her to strip the fallen pirates of their equipment and storage capsules, muttering the
hole time gleefully. “We are absolutely loaded right now. These guys were sitting on a fortune!
Red Scorpion hadn’t earned their reputation for nothing. Elizabeth’s attacks had wrecked a good portion the core components in their armor, but the weapons were top-shelf hardware across the board. fully harged, and the personal storage capsules were practically overflowing.
Thick bundles of high-denomination anonymous cards with stellar coins in them. Rare metal ingots. Several pieces of antique jewelry looked absurdly expensive even at a glance. And a stash of contraband stimulants that nobody was particularly surprised to find.
These guys were absolutely rolling in it,” Olivia muttered, working the armor clasps off one of the pirates with her uninjured right hand, wincing every time the motion pulled at the bruising along her ribs.
The pain made her grimace, but it didn’t come close to touching the gleam in her eyes.
They’d just robbed the people who made a living robbing everyone else. The irony was deeply, personally satisfying.
While the crew worked, Elizabeth stood and scanned the clearing with the focused look of someone mentally ticking through a checklist.
Then something clicked, and her eyes lit up like she’d just remembered where she’d left a treasure map. “Desmond!” she called out. “Find out where they docked their ship and retrieve it. Check if it’s flyable first. If it is, we’re taking it. If it isn’t, strip out the engines and power cores and clean out everything worth keeping.”
“Yes, Ma’am!” Desmond’s voice came back steady as ever, but there was something underneath it, bright and barely contained, that hadn’t been there before the fight.
There was nothing left to be afraid of, following a woman like this.
The six prisoners were soon gathered into a tight, watchful cluster, every one of them ashen-faced and trembling, staring at Elizabeth with the kind of terror usually reserved for things that crawled out of nightmare. She had become, in the span of about thirty seconds, something categorically worse than any predator they’d ever encountered in the field.
The haul of captured goods had grown into an impressive pile, including the pirate leader’s heavy energy axe, which Olivia and Rocket had dragged over with considerable effort and obvious pride.
Good news came back from Desmond’s end shortly after. “Ma’am, the ship checks out. The engine

“Flying is all that matters. We’ll repaint it later.” Elizabeth gave a satisfed nod. “Load all the captured gnon aboard, and get the prisoners into the cargo hold”
“Yes, Ma’am!”
By the time everything was squared away, the dying sun had stained the jungle a deep, burnished goldjand red.
Elizabeth raised one hand and swept it forward. “Let’s head home!”
Tycoon Farm’s exploration ship led the way, the seized Red Scorpion assault craft trailing behind it on a tow beam, and together the two vessels lifted slowly from the bloodstained Twilight Forest of Planet X-7 and climbed into the open dark of space. D
They cut through the stars with their spoils in tow, heavy with everything they’d found and everything they’d won, and turned toward home.
Fifth Military. Staff Command.
The air in the room sat thick and motionless, as though something invisible was pressing down on it from above.
The low, continuous hum of cooling systems in the holographic equipment was the only sound.
A massive star map projection hung suspended above the conference table, but nobody in the room was looking at it.
Several high-ranking staff officers with general stars on their collars sat around the table, and every face wore the same expression, dark and heavy and deeply, quietly furious. At the head of the table sat a man with a sharp, angular face and eyes as cold and precise as a hunting hawk’s. This was Gregory, Chief of Staff of Fifth Military, and he was currently sitting with his eyes closed, fingers tapping a slow, methodical rhythm against the polished surface of the table.
Then the encrypted channel flared to life with a harsh red pulse, the alert tone cutting through the silence in short, urgent bursts.
Bradley Hallowson, seated just below Gregory’s right hand, opened the line immediately. A voice came through, distorted by multiple layers of encryption and unmistakably frantic beneath the static. “Reporting in. The Red Scorpion operation has failed. Bloodsting is dead. The target is unharmed.”
“What?!” A hot-tempered major general shoved back from the table and slammed his palm down on it, hard enough to send every glass within two feet rattling against its surface. “What is Red Scorpion even good for? They couldn’t handle one C-level woman? They got completely wiped out? What exactly was Bloodsting’s SS-level supposed to do, just look impressive?”

The fingers tapping against the table stopped.
Gregory opened his eyes. His hawk-sharp gaze held no fury in it, none of the hot, messy rage filling the rest of the room. What lived there instead was something far colder, far deeper, and far more considered, with just the faint shadow of something that might have been concern moving at the very bottom of it.
He swept one measured look across his shouting subordinates, and when he spoke, the low, iron-weighted calm of his voice fell across the room like a heavy door closing. The shouting stopped.
