Gregory looked at him in silence for several seconds, then slowly sat back down in his chair. “Who are you sending?”

“I’ll personally choose someone and prepare a full disguise.” Weston stood up. “If everything goes smoothly, we should have back within a week.”
Gregory nodded. “Go. And remember, don’t leave any evidence behind.”
Weston turned to leave.
“Wait.” Gregory’s voice came from behind him. “If anything changes on the Swarmborn side…”
Weston stopped but didn’t turn around. “I’ll adapt as needed.”
In reality, Weston didn’t even get a week.
The messenger he sent didn’t survive three days.
The messenger was a lieutenant from the Fifth Military named Reuben Grimsby. He was around thirty years old and was experienced and skilled at handling gray-area operations.
Disguised as a wandering trader, he spent two full days roaming the Swarmborn border sectors with a ship full of contraband before finally encountering a Swarmborn scout.
He was brought into the Swarmborn nest through dark, damp passageways thick with the smell of chitin and secretions until h arrived at an enormous cavern.
The cavern was almost empty. Only a gigantic Swarmborn sat atop a raised platform in the center, staring down at him.
Its carapace was deep purple, and its compound eyes looked like twin blood-red moons. Its mouthparts were slightly parted, exposing rows upon rows of razor-sharp teeth.
Reuben’s legs felt weak, but he gritted his teeth and stood straight.
“I am an envoy sent by the Fifth Military. Regarding the defense deployment map delivered previously, has your side completed verification? We’ve been waiting for your operation to begin…”
He never finished speaking.
Because the creature suddenly moved.
It only moved once, but that single movement made the entire cavern seem to shake.

A dark sheen spread across the deep purple carapace as six massive limbs lifted slightly before settling back onto the ground.
The impact sounded like giant hammers crashing onto stone, and the entire cavern began to hum.
Reuben’s voice froze in his throat.
Something felt wrong, but he had no time to understand what.
The giant Swarmborn slowly rose to its feet and looked down upon the human beneath it,

Its compound eyes reflected Reuben’s pale face like two blood moons reflecting dying prey.

“We’ve already finished verifying the deployment map.” The giant Swarmborn’s voice rose from deep within its abdomen, l hoarse like the trembling of the earth itself. “After confirming it, we sent five teams to Planet A001 to carry out missions.”
Reuben froze. “Five teams?”
That number was far beyond anything he knew.
“The first: fifty. The second: two. The third: one hundred. The fourth: five hundred. The fifth: two thousand.” The giant Swarmborn’s voice sank lower and colder with every word, like ice slowly fracturing apart. “All of them lost contact, and not returned. Not one sent back a message either.”
It slowly stepped toward Reuben. The cavern echoed with the heavy impacts of its limbs striking the ground.
“So tell me, was your intelligence wrong, or was this a trap from the very beginning?”
Cold sweat covered Reuben’s forehead.
“T-this must be some kind of accident! We truly wanted to cooperate with you!”

“Cooperate?” The giant Swarmborn cut him off. Its voice suddenly rose, and a sharp screech burst from deep within its abdom making the entire cavern tremble.
