Chapter 618 The Miracle Strawberry
Chapter 618 The Miracle Strawberry
“Cyrus! Come in. come in! He stepped aside from the doorway and waved at Cyrus, inviting him to come
inside
The place was small, small to the point of feeling cramped.
Living room, dining room, and bedroom all in one, with nothing but an old couch, a folding dining table
and two chairs.
In the corner sat a pile of sorted scrap, bundled up neat and ndy
The kitchen was no bigger than a palm. A single pot sat on the stove, and in a bowl beside u were a few boiled potatoes and some plain stir-fried cabbage
The two children stood by the couch, watching Cyrus a little stiffly
The older one, a boy of seven or eight, had a sturdy, round-checked look to hum, though he was thin enough that there was hardly any flesh on his face.
The younger was a girl. five or six, her hair in two little braids, hiding shyly behind her brother and sneaking half a peck out at the visitor
Dale rubbed his hands together, a little embarrassed. “Place is a mess. Cyrus, don’t mind it. Sit, have a seat?
He lifted an old cushion off the couch to reveal the worn, mouled fabric underneath. ‘T’ll get you some
water.”
Cyrus didn’t sit.
He looked around the little room, at the neatly bundled scrap in the corner, and the thing lodged in his chest grew heavier and heavier.
“Dale, have the kids eaten?” he asked.
Dale faltered for a second, then smiled, and there was something hollow in it. “They’ve eaten, they’ve eaten. We just finished, actually, about to turn in.”
He turned to the two children. “Go do your homework in the other room. Daddy and Cyrus are going to talk a while. The kids nodded obediently, turned, and slipped into the back room, shutting the door
But Cyrus caught it, the way the little girl stole one last glance at those few potatoes on the table before the door closed, swallowing hard.
Cyrus didn’t call it out.
He sat down on the couch and drew a box of bright red strawberries out of his storage button, along with a bag of apples, a green-skinned watermelon, and a carton of Cluckoo Eggs
Dale traze on the spot.

He stood by the table holding that cup of plain boiled water, staring at the spread like he was witnessing something impossible.
“Cyrus… you… what’d you buy all this for? T-This must’ve cost a fortune…” He set the cup down, his hands unsure where to go. “Your family’s not exactly well-off either… You can’t be spending this kind of money…”
Cyrus stood and clapped him on the shoulder.
“We haven’t seen each other in all these years. What’s wrong with me bringing the kids a little something to eat?” He got up and knocked on the children’s door, calling them out to eat.
He picked up a strawberry and put it in the little girl’s hand. “Here, have a taste. I brought these specially for you two.”
The little girl looked shyly up at her father. Dale looked at that bright red berry, then at Cyrus, his lips working, and finally he nodded.
The girl took the strawberry and bit into it, carefully.
And in that instant, her eye’s flew wide.
She held that mouthful of strawberry like she couldn’t bear to swallow it, holding it a long moment before she finally chewed it down slowly, then looked up at Cyrus, her voice small but brimming with a delight she couldn’t hide. “Mister, this is… so sweet, so, so sweet…”
The little boy swallowed beside her, but didn’t reach for one.
Cyrus handed him one too. “Go on, eat. There’s plenty more.”
The boy glanced at his father, and seeing no objection, finally took it and bit in.
His reaction was almost exactly his sister’s, first the wide eyes, then, like he’d been struck by something, the tight look on his face all at once loosening.
“It’s good…” he mumbled.
Cyrus cut open the watermelon next, red flesh and black seeds, giving off a clean, sweet fragrance.
The two children each cradled a big piece, eating away happily, the juice running down their chins faster than they could think to wipe it.
Dale stood off to the side, watching his kids eat with such joy, and the lines on his face seemed to ease a little.
But he didn’t touch a thing himself.
Cyrus broke off a piece of watermelon and held it out to him. “You eat too.”
Tim not hungry. Save it for the kids…
