I woke up to a text from the boss. I rolled my eyes and disentangled mysel from Briar. It was
four in the morning and she had another hour to sleep so I just pulled the covers over her and slipped out of the room to see what my Alpha wanted. I read his text as I made coffee.
Him: I’ve got a pack from another state wanting to come in and look around, they are looking
for their Alpha’s mate. Do you know anything about this?
I had never lied to my Alpha, he’d know I read the message so I’d have to think fast. Misty was
right. He wasn’t sure where Adelaide was. So I chose to answer the question without
addressing the elephant in the room.
Carter: News to me. But I don’t like the idea of some other pack stomping around and
disrupting our territory or our people.
Technically them wanting to poke around was news to me, just not the kind my Alpha would
read into with my response. My blood was boiling. I had to keep her safe and I would defy him
if that’s what was necessary.
Him: I agree but if he keeps pestering me I will eventually have to cave or they will bring us
before the council for purposely interfering with an alpha and his mate. Regardless if she isn’t
even here.
I wanted to point our that she would mostlikely run away for a reason, but I held my thumbs
at bay as I replied. Couldn’t let him know I was sympathetic to my charge.
Carter: Make them work for it, the last thing I want to do is babysit some other Alpha and his
goons. Request probable cause and any proof they may have that she is here. Should take
them some time to come up with everything.

I failed to mention by doing so Creedon would have linked himself to the murder of the
lawyer. Wolves appreciated serecy. Jakes lawyer had given her some time, he knew his job was
a risky one and had paid the ultidmate price. If he came back with proof I’d have it countered
and shove that in the councils face.
Jake had taught Briar well, and she was a good student. She paid attention, asked questions
and surprised me by thinking out of the box. When I expected her to counter me one way, she always chose a different tactic then I was prepared for and thats how she put me on the floor.
Her strong legs wrapped around me and in a choke hold. As I told her she wasn’t letting up on
it till I tapped out. She plastered to me tightly her now strong thighs gripping me like a vice. Here hands fisted her wrists bracing perfectly against the artery on my neck. I tried to roll her but she countered her ass making it difficult. How had she gotten so strong so fast? I tapped
out before I lost consciousness.
I sucked in air, the blood rushing to my head as Briar rolled upright stradling me. Concerned
eyes met mine as I blinked back stars and her hand landed on my chest.
“Carter?”
I let out a long breath. She exhaled in relief. She sat back, her core resting on my very
prominent hard on for her. Her eyes shifted and she bit her lip. It took me a moment to
