Chapter 121
Briar

I woke to the gentle sound of both our alarms playing our chosen music. We shut them off and
groaned quietly. I slipped on a sports bra as I yawned before walking up to the pack ‘n‘ play to
check on the baby. Carter threw on a pair of sweats and grabbed a baby monitor before he
dragged me downstairs, the animals in our wake. He set us up at the two treadmills side by
side and flipped some music on as we ran without a word, the monitor set into a cup holder.
The program he had punched in set us off steady, then threw us into a grueling pace. I found I
easily kept up; however, the daily runs had been really building my endurance. Rosie and
Tucker lay down not too far away. Tucker decided he needed to groom himself as he leaned
against Rosie’s side.
After that, we hit the mats. Thirty minutes in, and Carter had me pinned with his hand around
my throat. He bent down close to my ear and whispered.
“What are you going to do about it, Briar, when he gets this close?” he tightened his fingers.
“When you are losing air because he got the best of you. When your body fails to remember
what a piece of shit he is, when you are tired of fighting him, when the will to submit
threatens Briar. What will you do?”
I mulled over his confusing words that suggested I would be too weak, like he was trying to
warn me about something without saying all the words. He ran his nose up my neck, and 1
shivered. His eyes, though his eyes though, held a sadness to them, or was it fear festering
there in the back of his mind? Was he worried I’d cave to the asshole? I was setting this
record straight.
I took a fistful of his hair and yanked it hard in one direction as I twisted my hips, throwing
my body into a roll following the force of his head being jerked, off–centering him. I shoved
my knee into his groin the second I was on top and had my thumbs pressing into his adam’s
apple.

My lip raised as I sneered. “I will die before ever submitting to that mother fucker. Carter
grinned, that sadness gone. My heart relaxed. That gave the fucker the perfect opportunity to
counter and pin me under him again. We went back and forth a few times.
