“Aren’t you cold?” Carter asked as he wrapped his arms around me from behind, as I stared at
the valley. One hand rested across my lower stomach, his thumb gently stroking the skin. I
shook my head no, I had been running hot recently, probably the pregnancy hormones kicking
in the feel of his arms around me. He kissed my hair and inhaled before I found myself asking.
“How does it feel when you shift?” I felt a smile turn up on his lips against my ear.
“Like breaking free, becoming whole, it feels right, like becoming one with the world around
you,” he tells me.
I sit with that for a moment, a sense of longing rising within me. I wanted that, the wolf
seemed to agree, as my skin felt suddenly itchy and I found myself flexing my fingers. To stave
off that feeling. I hooked one hand onto his arm, wrapped around my shoulders, letting the
other interlace with his hand over my flat stomach. When Lana had rushed out last night, she
came back with a box of saltines and five pregnancy tests. I had stared at them in disbelief
one after the other before I sank onto the hotel bed and stared at the wall. Lana, for once, was
quiet, letting me process. My brain was doing math. I had my period since being here once or
twice, after the stress and trauma, missing a few months wasn’t unheard of, but I was sure the
baby was Carter’s after I let the fact sync in. I have had a monthly cycle since escaping

want the baby, I’d run, knowing that Jake had left another purpose for me, that this pack was
my people, just solidified the stance I had resolved last night. I’d stand and fight for my future
with Carter. I’d become whatever I had to be to ensure this child had the life they deserved. I
would fight for it, if need be. A fierceness rose up and told me I would most definitely kill for

Love, pride, a primal sort of protection, but deeper down, the anxiety churned. I understood
our future was uncertain, that we would have to fight for it tooth and claw. But we would do it
together, and that made all the difference.
Carter
As she turned in my arms, she cupped my cheeks, she stared up at me, but I felt her as she
accessed the bond between us, feeling me entirely in my emotions. I did the same. Her thumbs
stroked the stubble across my cheeks, and I felt the overwhelming sense of rightness wash
over me from her side of the bond. She chose us. My eyes focused back on hers as her hands
tangled into my hair at the back of my head and brought my face down to hers. Our mouths
met, and I lifted her up by her thighs to tangle her legs around my waist before I moved us
inside. The kiss poured promises from both sides as I left the door open and plastered her
against the wall next to the fridge. We broke apart, and her heated breath panted. I gripped
