Chapter 96

Of course, Carter brought me to a ride with the girls, where they were dressed all cute as can
be, and here I was, in an oil–stained tee and loose–fitting jeans. Cleo, Tessa, and Amber were
chatting as they played a game of darts. Lana went to introduce us, and Amber just smiled and
said we had met, but she looked forward to getting to know me better. We had left them
chatting about their husbands and kids. I huffed, staring into the mirror. When Lana came out
of the stall.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“I didn’t get a dress code clause in the invite,” I said, motioning to what I was wearing. Lana
let her eyes wander slowly over me, biting her lip.
“You’re still hot, who cares?” she announced, moving to wash her hands as I brushed out my
hair and chuckled. Lana’s personality had a way of taking all my insecurities away. That’s
when Mazzie and Amber busted through the bathroom door, fuming. We both turned to look
at them.
“Ladies, we have a problem,” Amber announced. “Miranda’s crew is crashing our ride.” I felt
one of my hands ball into a fist. That bitch just couldn’t leave anything good alone.
“You can’t be fucking serious?” Lana asked, as I searched Mazzie’s face for confirmation. She
just shook her head in disapproval at what was sure to transpire.
“Carter sent me to keep an eye on you, Briar, but I’m more worried about what she plans to do
in regards to him. I don’t care what you two are, but you’re the only one who can realistically
play the part.”
“That fucking bitch,” my voice seemed to come out in a snarl. The girls nodded in agreement.

“Briar, you gotta hang on Carter like you fuck like animals on the regular, or she’s gonna try
something,” Mazzie said. The other two nodded as I was already making my way to the door,
tossing my backpack over my shoulder.
Amber stopped me and placed a hand on my chest before looking me up and down. “Not like
that. She will try to eat you alive. You can’t give her any room to talk her fucking bullshit.”
I chucked my bag on the counter and began digging around in it, and went to work quickly.
Mazzie’s eyes looked glassy as I glanced at her in the mirror.
