Chapter 7
Heavy footsteps thundered down the hall. Each step hammered against my skull like a
war drum.
Meg clambered into my lap, trying to shove the Boss away with her butt.
“Mommy, don’t be scared,” she whispered. “Grandma and Grandpa are back.”
The Boss didn’t budge.
He paused, then took my hand. His face turned red as he repeated her.
“Don’t be afraid.”
What a softie.
I wasn’t scared. Mainly because I’m blind.

I was actually excited to meet the new neighbors.
They sounded like a sprightly old couple.
The key scraped in the lock. The chat feed blew up.
[I can’t wait for Eleanor and Bernard. Someone needs to humble Alice.]
[What’s your problem? If a rookie beats this run, we all get the walkthrough.]
Click. The door swung open.
Two hunched shapes shuffled in, dragging heavy sacks,
Spotting her son on the floor, the woman lost it.
She lunged, shoving me away with shocking strength.
“You bitch!” she screamed.
“Don’t you dare touch my boy! I’ll kill you!”

A dark, crushing pressure filled the air.
I leaned forward, squinting at her.
She was a skeleton. Her clothes hung off her frame in tatters.
She was bald, and her face was a melted ruin, except for a mouth that clicked open and shut.
Her skin was charred black, like charcoal fresh off the grill.
If not for the voice, I wouldn’t have known she was a woman.
