Chapter 16
I arrived back on the thirtieth floor and felt the tension drain from my body. A light, carefree laugh escaped my lips.
The door stood wide open.
It occurred to me that the lock had remained disengaged since the moment I walked out. They had been waiting for my
return the entire time.
A sea of smiling faces greeted me in the living room. The dining table practically buckled under a mountain of food, and
the rich scent of my favorite hot cocoa filled the air.
Dozens of hands ushered me to the head of the table. I sat there like a queen holding court.
“We gave your friends their guest passes when they came up earlier,” one of them said with a beaming smile. “The rest of
this seventh day is ours.”
“Let us be a real family for just one day.”
Happiness made the hours fly by. Too soon, the sun set and evening settled over the manor.
Eleanor swept her arm across the air. Streaks of spectral fire lit up the night sky like Fourth of July pyrotechnics.
“Mom, that is absol…” I started to say.
Warm hands cupped my face. A soft kiss landed on my forehead.
His face was flushed, but his gaze remained fixed on my mouth. “May I?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly.
God, did he really have to ask? It was embarrassing to force a lady to take the lead.
I rose on my toes and clung to his shoulders. I pressed my mouth firmly against his to silence him.
The kiss grew deeper and slower.
Just as we found our rhythm, the boss shoved me back. With a sickening wet tear, he yanked his own head off his
shoulders.
He thrust the severed head into my hands. He looked up at me with big, soulful puppy-dog eyes.
“Th-this is better,” his disembodied head stammered. “Now you don’t have to stand on your tiptoes.”
I gazed at the head in my hands with total adoration. I leaned down and kissed him tenderly
“You’re a genius.” I murmured against his lips.
The chat feed exploded.

[Dude, I was actually rooting for them! Why did he have to turn it into a horror show?]
[They are perfect for each other. Perfectly twisted and completely oblivious]
After our intimate moment, the boss pressed a card into my palm.
That made thirty. The set was complete.
I studied the patterns on the cards. I knelt and arranged them on the floor, following the jagged lines until they formed
a coherent picture.
