Chapter 21
Why didn’t I hit the floor?
Wait. Someone had caught me.
No, not someone.
A monster had caught me.
The chat feed exploded.
[Holy shit. I knew it. The headless boss is here.]
These abs felt incredible.
His chest was rock-hard.
I traced the scar on his neck, his chiseled jaw, his captivating eyes, and that dark, ruthless stare.
I wrapped my arms around his neck in a massive bear hug.
“Honey! Is that you? I’ve found my long-lost husband at last!”
But I hugged him a little too tightly.
Pop-his head came right off his shoulders.
Yes.
His actual head.
I scrambled out of his arms.
I picked up his head and apologetically placed it back on his neck.
His expression hovered between a desire to devour me and utter confusion.
I scooped up Meg, the little girl in the bloody dress, before he could react.
I decided to go on the offensive.
‘Don’t look at me like that! Look at this mess.”
“What kind of father are you?
You let our daughter run around in soaking wet clothes.”

“You are completely irresponsible!”
Squinting through the blur, I stormed off to search the eighth floor.
I found Meg’s room and changed her into a dry outfit.
Then I tossed the bloody dress at the man.
“Go wash this.”
Caleb, who had just barely survived, gave a loud warning cough.
I winked at him reassuringly.
Everything was going according to plan.
Meg spoke up, deadpan.
“Mom. You’re winking at the wall. I’m over here.”
Whoops.
My bad. It’s hard to see without my glasses.
The chat feed was losing it.
[I get it now. She’s trying to pull a fast one.]
[She wants to catch the monster off guard and kill it to clear the level.]
[Headless boss, listen to me. Please, I beg you. Kill this fraud right now.]
But the headless boss seemed genuinely pissed off.
His eyes turned cold as dark energy swirled around him.
He fully materialized in the room.
He raised his hand to strike me.
