Chapter 34
A massive, cat-like head loomed over a player, claws sinking deep into his chest.
With a sickening rip and a bloodcurdling scream, the beast tore out his insides while he was still breathing.
(Initial Players: 16. Survivors: 7.]
The cat feasted on the bloody remains, its green eyes burning with pure vitriol.
*All we ever wanted was a safe place to sleep. We didn’t steal your homes, but you slaughtered us anyway.”
“You spiked the food bowls in the shelters built by the kind ones. You snapped our bones.”
“You watched us suffer for your own sick amusement.”
As the creature spat its accusations, the surrounding beasts followed suit on their own captives.
[Initial Players: 16. Survivors: 6.]
“We stayed in our lane inside this game. It was you who came looking for trouble, trying to wipe us out.”
“You arrogant, venomous parasites. Did you really think the First Floor was just full of fodder full of fodder”
[Initial Players: 16. Survivors: 5.]
The pieces fell into place for me.
These rookies had gotten restless.
Too cowardly to face the horrors on the upper levels, they thought they could farm easy redemption credits.
They never expected to kick a hornet’s nest.
“Help me! Oh god, help me!”
The guy strapped to the chopping block locked eyes with me, recognizing me as a veteran player.
He did not care about my ruined face anymore, screaming my name in a frenzy of desperation.
I surveyed the slaughterhouse, my mouth opening to speak, but the beasts beat me to it.
They were putting on a show.
They were putting on a show specifically for an audience of one.
Right before my eyes, they dismantled the players, mirroring the cold efficiency humans use in slaughterhouses.

*Alice, we know you are family from the Eighth Floor. But this blood feud is none of your business.”
“Walk away. Now.”
[Initial Players: 16. Survivors: 4.]
I stood my ground.
I walked straight up to the alpha and wrapped my hand around the blade of the cleaver clutched in its paw.
I widened my eyes, squinting through my myopia to force eye contact.
“If you butcher the innocent just like the scum who hurt you, how are you any better than them?”
This slaughter gives you a quick high, but it leaves nothing but a hollow ache behind.”
“Keep going, and you will lose yourselves completely. You will become nothing but monsters, trapped here forever.”
“Look in the mirror.”
“Is this really the life you want?”
“Do you not remember the sun on your fur? The smell of the garden?”
“Don’t you miss rolling in the grass? The taste of fresh treats?”
“Don’t you miss the gentle hands that once held you?”
