I woke up in the hospital. It was the day after Christmas.

Alex was there. His eyes were still swollen.

“Alex.” My voice cracked. “I’m sorry. I ruined your holiday.”

He touched my head. His eyes got wet again. “Stupid. I got to see you. Best holiday

ever.”

I’d burned bridges to marry Jon. Fought everyone. Even Alex, who never said no to me,

told me not to go.

I didn’t listen. Stole my papers. Ran off with him in the night.

“Mom and Dad?” I asked, careful.
