Chapter 7
The moment the car stopped, Julian was already out of the car, Tiffany’s condition, the appointment, all of it gone from his mind. He went straight to Clara’s office.
He pushed the door open and stopped short. There was a stranger behind Clara’s desk.
There had always been a photo on that desk, the three of them, taken years ago. It was gone now. The surface was bare.
Julian’s throat tightened. “I need to speak with Dr. Vance,” he said, his voice coming
out steadier than he felt.
Julian had assumed the suspension was temporary, just a formality. He’d already spoken to the hospital administration about having her reinstated within a week.
The man looked up from his desk. “Dr. Vance resigned.”
Why would she resign?” Julian muttered, almost to himself.
The man shrugged. “The hospital offered to reinstate her. She turned it down and walked away anyway.”
The lawyer’s call that morning came rushing back. Divorce papers. And now this.
This wasn’t a tantrum. This wasn’t some game to get his attention. She meant every word of it. Clara wouldn’t have walked away from a career she’d spent years building just to prove a point.
And yet his ego still pushed back. He stared the man down. “Did she put you up to this?”
She’d made a scene the first time, crying, pleading, demanding answers. But that had faded. Eventually she’d stopped bringing it up at all, stopped asking questions he didn’t want to answer. He’d taken that as acceptance.
“Mr. Vance, I just transferred here last month I don’t know anything about Dr. Vance beyond her personnel file.”
There was nothing in the man’s face to grab onto, no guilt, no evasion, nothing.

Tiffany showed up with Leo a moment later. She took one look at Julian and frowned. “What happened? You look like you just saw a ghost.”
Julian said nothing.
Leo grabbed his hand. “Dad, what’s wrong?”
Julian didn’t answer. Leo dropped his hand and pushed the office door open.
“Mom? Are you in here?”
He stepped inside, then stopped short. His voice trailed off. A stranger was sitting at his
mother’s desk.
Leo stood there for a moment, then quietly walked up to the man.
“Excuse me, do you know where my mom is?
The man’s brow furrowed. He’d heard the whispers about Clara and Julian, the way the staff talked, that she was the one who’d broken up a home. And yet here was a little boy calling her Mom.
“Dr. Vance doesn’t work here anymore. She resigned.”
Leo stood very still. Then he turned and ran back to Julian.
“Dad, where’s Mom? The man says she left.”
Tiffany had heard enough. Her eyes darted between Leo and Julian’s ashen face, and the pieces snapped into place,
“Julian,” Tiffany said slowly, “is Clara divorcing you?”
He rounded on her. “That’s not happening.”
“Dad,” Leo chimed in, perfectly repeating what he’d clearly been taught, “since Mom’s leaving anyway, I want Tiffany to be my mon instead.”
Julian stared at his son. The words were Leo’s but they weren’t really his. He could hear
Tiffany in every syllable. He wondered how long this brainwashing had been going on.

“Come on.” Tiffany took his arm and guided Bim down the corridor. “The appointment first. We’ll sort the rest out later.”
Julian went with her. His mind was elsewhere.
His phone buzzed just outside the ultrasound room. His assistant’s voice.
“Mr. Vance, a package arrived for you this morning. I opened it to check the contents. Looks like some kind of legal document. Want me to scan and forward it?”
