Chapter 2
We passed a bakery on the way home, its lights already dimming for closing. Mom
slowed her steps.
Something in her voice cracked. “I’m craving something sweet. I’ll grab a cake real quick.”
Dad and Sam exchanged a look, the kind where they were both in on the same secret.
“It’s Lily’s birthday. Bet that’s who it’s for.” Sam’s voice carried that smug certainty only little brothers can pull off. “See? Mom still loves her.”
Was it really for me? I stared at them, afraid to hope.
I trailed behind them all the way home. The moment Mom stepped through the door,
she froze at the sight of the mess I’d left behind.
The color drained from her face, and Dad’s expression darkened right alongside hers.
Dad shot Sam a look, and my brother rushed to grab the broom.
Sam muttered under his breath, just loud enough for me to hear. “Lily’s so clueless. We
finally got Mom in a decent mood, and she couldn’t even bother cleaning up first.”
I threw my hands up, desperate for them to understand. “Sam, I didn’t mean to! I’m
dead-I can’t even touch the damn broom!”
The words caught in my throat, unheard. Mom let out a disgusted scoff.
She turned toward my bedroom and shouted, ‘You get lazier every single day!”
זיי
gave you life, and this is how you repay me Can’t you do one simple thing right?”
Silence stretched through the apartment. Normally, I would’ve had everything spotless before Mom’s mood even shifted.
She’d never had to yell this long without getting a response from me, and it was only making her angrier. She slammed the cake on the table and marched toward my bedroom door.

My chest tightened, caught somewhere between dread and desperate hope. Just open it, Mom. You’ll see I’m not here. You’ll never have to deal with me again.
Just as her hand touched the doorknob, Dad grabbed her wrist. It was one of the few times he’d ever stepped between Mom and me.
“It’s her birthday, hon. Can we give it a rest for tonight?”
Something flickered in Mom’s expression, and after a long moment, she let her hand
drop.
Once Mom had fallen asleep, Dad slipped out to the balcony for a cigarette, and Sam
trailed after him.
“Dad, this is all Lily’s fault. She ruins everything!”
“She’s always setting Mom off. I can’t even invite friends over anymore, and I have to tiptoe around doing my homework. When does this stop?”
“I wish she’d just… disappear.”
“Shut up!”
The slap came before Sam could finish. “That’s your sister! Don’t you dare talk about
her like that!”
“But you’re tired of it too! I’ve seen you down in the parking lot at night, smoking for like an hour before you’ll even come upstairs!
Sam threw his arms over his head but didn’t back down. Dad started to say something, then just let out a heavy sigh instead.
His voice dropped to barely a whisper. “It’s not easy for Lily, either.”
“But I’m exhausted too. I just want a few days where nobody’s screaming…”
The exhaustion carved into Dad’s face made my chest ache. I wanted to scream at him from where I was standing.
Just look down, Dad. I’m right here. All your problems are solved.
