Chapter 9
The system told me all of this through a dream. Even remembering it sent chills through my bones, a phantom
ache in my chest.
I shook my head, trying to let it go. James could never have loved me. If he thought he did, it was only because he’d
lost a convenient pet. Someone who could murder his own children didn’t know what love was.
I was happy now. If the system hadn’t shown me, I probably would have forgotten everything.
I took a deep breath and was about to step outside when there was a knock at the door. The moment I opened it,
the system’s alarm blared.
[Warning, former host. A character from the instance has discovered the truth about your departure and found a
way to cross over. He is currently at your door.]
Before I could react, James burst through and wrapped his arms around me. “Evelyn, I finally found you. I knew you
didn’t die.”
A cold, metallic scent clung to him. I trembled uncontrollably but forced myself to push him away. “You have the
wrong person. My name isn’t Evelyn. I don’t know you. I’m calling the police.”
His eyes were red. “Evelyn, I know everything now. I know I can’t have kids. I know you came to my world to give me
children. I was too stupid to see what I felt for you. I hurt you so many times, but I’m begging you, give me one more
chance. I’ll do anything. Come back with me. From now on, it’s just you and me.”
I backed away, my skin crawling. “No. I’m not going back. I have a real home here People who actually love me. I’d
rather die than go back to that hell.”
I ran to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. “Get out now, or I’ll kill you.”
His eyes were wet, but he laughed softly. “Evelyn, don’t threaten me. Murder is a crime, you know.”
When I didn’t answer, his expression shifted, almost pleading. “Please don’t treat me like this You used to be so good
to me. You loved me. I know I made mistakes, but I’ve changed. Give me a chance, and I swear, no one will ever come
between us again.”
He stepped closer, reaching for my hand. He probably thought I didn’t have it in me.
I stabbed him in the chest.
The blood hit the floor and vanished instantly. My voice shook, but I didn’t waver
“You’re wrong. James. I stopped loving you a long time ago.”
There was a time I actually thought about staying with you forever, but you’re the one who ruined that I don’t need you. And I’m not going back to that miserable life with you. You don’t even exist here No one knows who you are if
I kill you, no one’s ever going to find out

For a moment, his eyes went wide with shock, with fear. Then the blade came free, and his body faded into nothing.
My hands were clean. No blood at all.
I let out a long breath and locked the door.
The system’s voice echoed in my head. [The rift has been repaired. The other-world character has been returned to
his original reality. He will not survive. All related memories will now be erased from your mind. Wishing you the best.
This time… goodbye for real.]
The system’s voice faded, and for a moment, my mind went blank. Like I’d forgotten something.
But if I forgot it, it probably wasn’t important.
