The day of the surgery quickly arrived. Layla had taken time off specifically to accompany Samantha to the hospital.
She insisted on going with Samantha for such an important day. If anything happened, she would be there to back her up. And if it came down to a fight, at least she could lend a hand.
Samantha couldn't help but laugh. "It's not like it's going to come to that."
But Layla was still worried.
"Who knows what kind of trouble your disgusting adoptive dad will cause? He's always finding ways to make your life miserable. He'd do anything for that manuscript. I seriously suspect that the last car accident was something he planned just to hurt you!"
"If that were the case, he'd be committing a crime. He wouldn't go that far."
"People blinded by greed will do anything. Don't give him the benefit of the doubt!"
Samantha didn't say anything, but the thought of facing Matthew again made her uneasy. Since Layla was insistent, she finally agreed. It would be better to have someone there to back her up.
The two of them took the elevator, and Samantha nervously linked her arm with Layla's.
Layla patted her arm. "Don't be nervous. Ethan is one of the top surgeons, and he has international recognition. I've heard his failure rate is very low. He wouldn't want to ruin his reputation, so everything will be fine."
When Ethan was mentioned, Samantha asked, "Do you still stay in touch with him?"
"No."
"Not at all? He didn't reach out to you?"
"He did, but I didn't respond."
Samantha couldn't help but give Layla a thumbs-up. "Layla, you're really standing your ground now."
Layla scoffed. "He just wanted to know if I could make an extra lunch when I cooked, and he would pay me."
"How much did he offer to pay?"
"200 per meal."
"You didn't take the offer?"
As soon as Samantha stepped through the door, Matthew grabbed her and tried to drag her out.
"Have you made up your mind yet?" he hissed. "Dr. Reed is here, and the surgery is set. All we're waiting for is the payment! How long are you planning to drag this out before giving me the manuscript?"
Samantha yanked her hand away. "I won't give you the manuscript."
Matthew's voice rose. "Do you want to see my mother die because of you?"
"You can speak louder if you want. That way, Grandma will hear your little plan."
"You little—" He was furious and glared at her, but his voice automatically dropped. "I've already prepared the money. As long as you give me the manuscript, she can have the surgery anytime."
Samantha coldly watched him, her eyes unwavering. "Do you really think they would prep for the surgery before the medical bill is paid?"
"What do you mean by that?"
She responded coldly, "I've already made the payment."
