Layla couldn't offer any answers. The only thing she could do was comfort Samantha.
Time dragged on, and every moment felt like an agonizing wait for both those outside and inside the operating room.
One hour.
Two hours.
Three hours…
No one knew how much time had passed when the door to the operating room creaked and slowly opened.
Ethan emerged in his white coat, looking exhausted with his eyes bloodshot.
Everyone outside the room jumped to their feet and quickly gathered around him.
"Dr. Reed, how did it go?"
"Was the surgery successful?"
They eagerly asked about the surgery, desperately waiting for an answer.
Under their intense gaze, Ethan nodded slightly. "The surgery went smoothly."
His voice was hoarse from the long hours of surgery, but there was a note of relief in it, which eased the tense atmosphere surrounding them.
He continued, "But she will need to stay in the ICU for a while for observation. As long as her condition stabilizes, she will be able to live a normal life."
"Okay, doctor!"
"That's such good news!"
Samantha was so emotional that she nearly burst into tears. Overjoyed, she covered her mouth and hugged Layla tightly.
Layla gently patted her on the back. "I told you, Dr. Reed is incredible. He would make it happen!"
"Yes!"
Seeing their joy, Ethan's gaze softened slightly, but his expression quickly became serious again.
"However, the recovery process will still be long and critical," he said. "There are risks of complications. You must strictly follow the medical instructions for care and rehabilitation training and have regular check-ups. You can't afford to be careless."
With that, she left.
Only Samantha and Layla were in the hospital room, with Cynthia still unconscious in her bed. After a moment of silence, Samantha suddenly spoke. "I think Ethan treats you differently from how he treats others."
"How so?"
"He's such a meticulous person, unwilling to give anyone guarantees about the risks of surgery. But today, he said he would definitely succeed for you. Do you know how much pressure that must have been?"
Layla lowered her gaze, seemingly lost in thought. "Maybe he's just confident in himself?"
"That's not just confidence. He didn't want to disappoint you."
"No way."
Samantha leaned closer to Layla and said in a teasing tone, "Have you never thought about something happening between you two?"
Just then, the door opened. Both Samantha and Layla quickly turned, only to find Ethan standing at the door in his white coat.
Layla looked away, deliberately avoiding his gaze.
