"Don't misunderstand," Samantha said. "I'm just trying to find out for Layla. I think they like each other, but she says there's too big of a gap between them. Do you know what Ethan's family is like? Do you think they have a chance to be together?"
Leonardo's expression softened slightly as if he had just exhaled a quiet breath. But a second later, he looked puzzled. "Does he… have someone he likes?"
He frowned slightly, thinking of Ethan, who was always buried in research and medical books. It was hard to imagine that fool in a romantic relationship.
To Leonardo, Ethan was a genius completely absorbed in academics, someone who was clueless about social matters. Could such a person even fall in love?
Honestly, he'd sooner believed that pigs could fly.
Samantha snorted. "You don't know what it's like to fall for someone, so you wouldn't understand. It's an uncontrollable emotion; no matter what kind of person he is, he will experience it."
Leonardo raised an eyebrow. "So, are you saying I'm not human?"
"No, that's not what I meant!" Samantha quickly backpedaled, her survival instinct kicking in. "I mean, someone like you, so high up and god-like, naturally wouldn't bother with such silly little things. Your heart is full of greater, even bigger love!"
Leonardo was speechless. He wasn't in the mood to entertain Samantha's flattery.
Samantha discreetly studied his expression. Seeing no signs of anger, she continued asking. "So, is the Reed family complicated? If they want to be together, do they stand a chance?"
"Don't worry. The Reed family is much simpler than the Garrett family. All the assets Ethan has are self-made. His parents just nag him about marriage, but they don't cause trouble. As long as the woman is good and Ethan likes her, everything will be fine."
"Really? That's great!"
Samantha's expression immediately brightened.
So, Layla's concerns were unnecessary. They would definitely be able to be together.
If Layla could find a good partner, Samantha would be happy for her too.
Leonardo suddenly interjected, "But are you sure she's a good woman?"
Samantha's smile dropped in an instant, replaced by a serious expression. "Of course! Layla is the best person I've ever met! She's kind, sincere, and truly cares about those around her. If not, Ethan wouldn't like her! He isn't an idiot. He's smart!"
"You seem to know them well." He restarted the engine and merged into traffic. "Do you know yourself?"
"Fondue!"
"The smell's too strong."
"You decide then. I'm fine with anything."
Leonardo didn't say anything more.
As night fell, it draped over the city like a large swath of black satin.
However, the balcony of Sterling Residences' penthouse was bathed in warm yellow light, creating a cozy little world amidst the bustling metropolis.
A wooden table sat quietly in the center of the balcony, surrounded by a variety of fresh ingredients. In the middle sat two fondue pots. One pot was filled with a creamy, mild blend of mozzarella and fontina, the other bubbling with a classic mix of Gruyere and Emmental.
Samantha stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass door, glancing between the food outside and Leonardo.
