Samantha glanced back at Leonardo and smiled. "I didn't buy it. It was a gift."
"A gift? From whom?"
"The day Layla and I went to Evergreen's flagship store to get that bag, we ran into your brother. He gave it to me—"
Before she could finish, Leonardo stood up and yanked the keychain off her bag. He did it so forcefully that he almost tore the strap off.
"Leonardo, what are you doing!" Samantha tried to stop him, but he shot her a sharp look, and she backed off without another word.
He looked terrifying.
She watched as Leonardo walked into the kitchen, grabbed a pair of scissors, and, without hesitation, sliced the little dog keychain right down the middle.
It was brutal. She couldn't even bear to look.
A moment later, he asked, "Do you see what this is?"
Reluctantly, Samantha looked up.
The keychain's stuffing was scattered everywhere on the coffee table. Inside were some tiny electronic parts, the wires cut clean through. In Leonardo's hand was a small black square device with snipped wires sticking out.
"What is that?"
"A bug."
"What?"
Samantha couldn't believe it.
Wasn't Kevin Leonardo's brother? Why would he hide a listening device in a gift? That was something only a creep would do.
She had only met Kevin twice. He'd always seemed so calm, polished, and gentlemanly to her. He'd always been smiling and looked refined.
Was he a creep? That didn't make sense.
Suddenly, she remembered something and said quickly, "Wait! I think I get it! He said someone had been handing them out as promos on his way over. Maybe—"
Leonardo clearly trusted her. If she said no, he believed it.
The peppermint tea had cooled quite a bit by now. He finished the rest in one big gulp and then reminded her, "Stay away from that lunatic from now on. If you see him, walk the other way. Got it?"
"Okay."
Samantha didn't quite understand, but she nodded obediently.
Leonardo headed straight for his study.
Left alone in the living room, Samantha sat cross-legged on the rug, leaning back against the couch as she replayed everything he'd just said.
She couldn't shake the feeling that there was way more going on between Leonardo and Kevin than met the eye. Laura also treated them completely differently.
Leonardo never talked much about his family, and Samantha never pushed. But still... something about Kevin made it seem like he was really Laura's biological son...
Meanwhile, under the warm-toned lighting in the study, Leonardo's expression was utterly cold.
