"12th floor. Thank you."
"15th floor. Thank you."
"23rd floor. Thank you."
Inside the elevator, people called out their floor numbers one after another, and the person standing near the panel would press the button accordingly.
Samantha quickly followed suit, "28th floor. Thank you!" Her voice was loud and sincere.
After she spoke, everyone in the elevator turned to look at her.
She was puzzled. Wasn't there a 28th floor in the Evergreen Corporation building? She clearly remembered Leonardo had told her about it.
"I'm sure I didn't make a mistake. There is a 28th floor, right?" she innocently asked.
A man standing by the panel sized her up, his eyes flashing with admiration. However, when he thought about the floor number Samantha had just mentioned, he couldn't help but sneer. "Looks like someone's trying to use their looks to climb up fast. What a waste of a pretty face."
Samantha frowned. "Did I piss you off or something?"
The man's face immediately fell. "Why do you have to be so rude?"
"I'm afraid if I wasn't rude, you wouldn't realize how offensive your words were," she replied.
The man smirked, unwilling to let it go. "Oh, so you think taking shortcuts is okay, but you don't want anyone to say anything?"
A woman nearby spoke up in support. "She's obviously new. She's trying to use her looks to climb the ranks but doesn't even know what kind of person Mr. Garrett is. No matter how beautiful a celebrity is, it means nothing to him. And someone like you, with nothing but skin and bones…"
She trailed off, sizing Samantha up. She had been about to call her scrawny and inexperienced, but Samantha's figure was too stunning, with curves in all the right places. There was no way she could say that.
She quickly changed her tune. "Anyway, no matter how hard you try, it won't work. Mr. Garrett doesn't fall for that kind of thing. It's better for you to keep your head down as a newcomer, or you might end up losing your job."
The man chimed in again, laughing. "But if it's love you're looking for, our department has plenty of suitable guys. Most of them earn a million a year, and the chances of getting together with them are high. You should think about it."
Another man teased from the side. "You're just trying to shoot your shot, aren't you?"
Everyone around them laughed.
The man replied indifferently, "As if you're not interested in her."
The other person laughed again. "Who doesn't like a pretty face?"
"This is the employee elevator," she softly said. "It doesn't go directly to the CEO's office. If you want to go there, you need to take the elevator on the far right."
Samantha was shocked.
She had noticed earlier that there was another elevator with no one lining up for it. Since the elevator was so high-tech and the floor numbers didn't show, she hadn't known whether it was even in service.
With so many people around and not a single one using that elevator, she thought it was out of order.
Once Samantha realized this, she quickly turned to the young woman and said, "Thank you."
"No problem."
The elevator reached the 27th floor, and the young woman quickly stepped out and hurried away.
Samantha watched her leave, wondering if she had scared her off. Did she look like a monster? Did the young woman think Samantha was going to eat her?
The young woman was definitely the ultra-introverted type. But at least she was kind.
Samantha also exited the elevator and pressed the button for the elevator on the far right. When the door opened, there were no buttons inside. There was only an electronic screen that read—"Swipe card or scan QR code."
