Wynta
There it was again the feeling that someone was following her. She kept her steps regular and even and kept herself composed, as she wondered after seeing Nolan on the weekend. If it was him or one of his men. Had he tracked her down? It was possible, she supposed, if he had gotten the car’s number plate that had driven her home yesterday.
She bit her lip but tried to give nothing away as she got closer to her apartment, but as she came up to her apartment building, she slowed her steps to get her wolfsbane from her purse and she sensed it; a definite wolfen presence behind her, but it was the car and the man sitting across from her apartment that made her realize she was in trouble, there was more than one of them.
She actually did know all the cars that belonged to the neighbors around here. That wasn’t one she recognized, nor was that man in it who had been looking right at her, but was no longer paying her attention. He was looking behind her, she was about to be snatched off the street and she knew it. That thought pumped adrenaline through her body. She stopped walking as if looking in her bag for her keys. She had to take matters into her own hands before they got the upper hand.
That wolf behind her ran right into her a moment later, likely talking with his buddy across the street getting ready to coordinate their movements, and his hand landed on her waist as if to steady himself as she pulled on her sunglasses, and she spun round and kneed him right in the groin as she lifted the wolfsbane, she held her breath and pressed the button down.
She wasn’t about to affect herself with it. Even though the wind wasn’t blowing towards her and up the street in the direction of her assailant, she wouldn’t risk it, there were two of them. Her eyes widened behind her sunglasses as she realized it was Jared Hayes, that she’d just attacked, and then she saw him stumbling about.
She cursed as he latched on to her in a tight grip and grated out her name, almost angrily. But how the hell was she supposed to know who it was? She couldn’t bloody smell him, though his eyes she now realized had been across the street, he’d been looking at that car that was now driving off up the street away from them.
Not one of his pack members, in other words, or they would have just jumped out to help him. She had no choice but to grab on to him and haul his heavy ass into her apartment building. He was staggering about, muttering something about how he was going to punish her for this.
She had him half shoved up against the wall as she unlocked her door, and then she was pushing him inside. She couldn’t leave him outside unconscious. Not with an unknown wolf still out there in that car, they could be his pack’s enemy for all she knew, if, of course, he hadn’t been one of Nolan’s men.
She had him inside the apartment, and he was out cold, and she couldn’t hold on to his weight anymore. He was too bloody big and heavy, as a completely dead weight, and it showed her just how much he had been fighting to maintain some sort of control over his body as she’d tried to get him inside.
He dragged her down onto the floor as he collapsed, and she was half pressed underneath him and had to shove him up and over onto his back to get out from under his unconscious body. It was an effort. The man was six–four and solid muscle, she kind of just lay there for all moment and caught her own breath. She wasn’t exactly tiny at five–nine herself, but she didn’t possess wolfen strength.
Finally, she managed to sit up and turn and look at the unconscious Alpha on the floor of her apartment and a laugh bubbled up inside of her, at the sight of him. He had a redden irritated band of skin across his eyes where she had sprayed him directly, and the skin was a little blistered, he kind of looked like a raccoon.
He was going to be pissed when he woke up, but it was the funniest thing she’d seen in a long time. She stood and looked down at him after regaining her composure, wondering what to do with him. Did she call his own Beta and risk being hauled in for attacking him? She was certain they weren’t going to take it lightly and Jared’s own words of punishing her, likely his own unit would know him well enough to understand they had to haul her in for him to do that, when he regained consciousness.
She pulled her phone out and bit her lip as she looked at him, turned her face away. It really was too funny to look at him, a big, powerful Alpha Wolf rendered unconscious, and so easily by one that was wolf–less. He was going to be so embarrassed. She wasn’t calling Dwane, nope. She had no idea what Jared’s unit was like, not really.
She put a call to Chester. He was the best person for her to talk to. He picked up on the sixth ring. “Wynta, what’s wrong?” he asked.
“Um, got me a bit of… well, funny dilemma. Not so funny for Jared though, he’s going to be really mad.”
“What?”
“Hmm, I thought I was being stalked and about to be snatched off the street, sensed a wolf and, well, when its hand landed on me, I kind of reacted, and now well…”
“Well, why are you calling me? I don’t understand.”
“I kneed him in the… balls,” she tried not to laugh, “and dosed him with aerosoled wolfsbane, before I knew who it was.”
“What!” Chester gasped.
“Yeah! He’s kind of unconscious on my apartment floor right now. But…” she snorted as she looked at him and thought about a raccoon.
“But?” she heard amusement in Chester’s own voice now.
“He kind of looks like a raccoon.” She burst out. “Oh my Goddess, Chester, it’s hilarious.”
“Send me a picture,” he snorted, and then she heard him yelling for Edward. “Hey Edward, Wynta brought your son down. She’s gonna send a picture.”
She almost couldn’t believe it. They also thought it was funny. She shook it off and snapped the photo and sent it through. There was a lot of laughing at the other end of the line as they all saw it. She shook her head. “You’d best come and get him,” she stated.
“Oh, hell no, he’s your problem now, Wynta.” Edward snorted, “but that is going on the mantle.
“Come on Edward, this is your son you’re talking about. Send someone to pick him up. I don’t want him waking up in my apartment. He was already cursing and muttering about punishment when he was staggering around before he succumbed.” She sighed.
“Just leave him there, he’ll wake up on his own. It was only wolfsbane, right?” Edward asked.
“Yes but…” she bit her lip “We already don’t get along.”
“Why was he following you?”
“I don’t bloody know, but…” she wondered if he’d seen or smelled other wolves in the area.
“But?” she heard both Chester and Edward ask, and it was on a more serious note they’d picked up her apprehension.
“There was another wolf across the street, Jared was focused on him and he, Jared. I didn’t recognize him,” she sighed.
There was silence now for a moment, and she knew all the joking was gone. “Leave Jared there, it could keep you safe, They’ll smell an Alpha in the apartment building outside your door along with your scent. He could well know that person or knew you needed an escort. We’ll have to wait until he wakes up to find out,” Edward told her.
She sighed. “He’s not going to be happy when he wakes up
Edward.”
“Agreed, but, that’s what he gets for stalking a she–wolf without her knowledge. Luckily, you’re without wolf, or you could have done serious damage to him.”
“Well, I could have done that anyway. He took a knee to the balls Edward. Before he saw it coming, I landed it pretty hard,” she bit her lip, looking down at Jared lying on the floor.
There was a silence for a moment and then a heavy sigh. “Well, Wynta, I guess that one you’ll have to defend on your own.” Edward murmured, “I’m not going to haul you in for defending yourself. Jared will likely be looking for punishment but, really what can he expect? Good luck, he’s your problem for the night.” And the line clicked closed.
She sighed and shook her head. She didn’t even know how long he was going to be out. “Your own dad says serves you right.” She murmured and walked off to get a drink. She stood. looking at him and then got a wet wash cloth and washed his face. She couldn’t in all good consciousness let that wolfsbane sit there and burn his skin all night.
It was likely going to be hours before he woke up, and it was already almost a quarter to nine. She made a light snack and ate while staring at him. She had to get up and roll him onto his side so as not to laugh at his face.
It was going to be a long night, she thought to herself and wondered if she could risk a shower and sleep. She didn’t know him at all, but she did know he wasn’t likely to harm her, not when his dad had told him he had to bring her into the pack, he was also likely to be out for a few hours at least. She stood, he might get angry with her, but he couldn’t do anything to her without his father finding out, she would be fine and, hell, he could be out till the sun came up for all she knew.
She showered and pulled something on to sleep in, a simple black silk slip, when she normally slept naked, and settled herself in bed to read until she was too tired to stay awake.
It was near midnight, and Jared hadn’t so much as stirred at all. She made herself comfortable and curled around her pillow to allow sleep to claim her.
