Marina walked up to her bedroom door, carrying a bowl of hangover soup. She was about to just walk in, but hesitated and knocked instead. I made you some hangover soup.”

Since there were people downstairs, she lowered her voice as much as she could.

But there was no response from Daron inside. Marina frowned in confusion, opened the door just a crack, and peeked her head in to take a look.

There was probably no one in this world more insignificant than me, Marina thought to herself as she stepped into her own room with caution.

The lights were on, but the man who had been sitting at the vanity was nowhere to be seen.

Marina could faintly hear the sound of running water coming from the bathroom.

She pushed the door open and walked in. She had just set the bowl down on the table when Daron stepped out of the bathroom.

His black shirt was damp in places, and beads of water still clung to his face.

Marina was momentarily stunned.

Seriously, how does he sober up so fast?Marina thought to herself.

Daron walked out, saw Marina, and said calmly, I used your bathroom.

Marina nodded, still a little stunned, and replied casually, No problem. Feel free.

Daron simply nodded, walked past her, and grabbed a tissue from her vanity to dab the water off his face.

Things got a little tense for a moment. Marina pressed her lips together, glanced at the hangover soup on the table, and murmured, I made you some hangover soup. I’m not sure if you’ll like it, but do you want to give it a try?

After a brief hesitation, she picked up the bowl and offered it to Daron.

Daron didn’t even think twicehe took the bowl from Marina and drank it all in one go without hesitation.

He didn’t even worry for a second that Marina or Elnora might be trying to set him up.

After finishing the hangover soup, Daron glanced down at Marina. Her eyes were shining, locked onto him, her whole face brimming with hope.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as the urge he’d just pushed down came rushing back.

Daron knew he couldn’t stay here any longer.

He’d meant to mess with her, but now it felt like she was the one messing with him.

Marina reached out to take the empty bowl from Daron. When she saw he was about to leave, she quickly said,

There are still a few guests downstairs who haven’t left yet.”

Daron nodded, but didn’t slow his pace at all.

Marina felt a pang of anxiety and hurried after him.

If you go down nowshe started,

But before Marina could finish, Daron was already at the stairs after just a few steps.

Marina gently bit her lip and shut her eyes for a moment.

Downstairs, the guests were about to head out, but when they saw Daron making his way down the stairs, everyone paused and the room went quiet.

Elnora turned around, her gaze sweeping the room.

She looked completely composed, not even a flicker of worry in her eyes.

Marina took a deep, steadying breath, had no choice but to pull herself together, and forced a smile. She walked to the top of the stairs and softly called out to Daron as he headed down, Be careful on your way home, and don’t forget to text me when you get there.”

This was all she could do to try and fix things now.

Daron made it to the living room, stopped, shot Marina a look, and gave her a nod. Okay.

Then he strode right out the door.

Marina saw the guests standing by Elnora finally look less confused, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

But she still couldn’t relax, afraid they might notice something was off about the deal they’d just made, so she said quickly, I’ll walk you to the door.”

Without waiting for Daron to respond, she jogged down the stairs and made her way over to him.

The guests standing next to Elnora exchanged a few knowing, slightly suggestive smiles at the way Marina acted.

As Daron strode out of the living room, the guests instinctively stepped aside, grinning and greeting him. Mr. Zamora, take care.

Daron gave them a slight nod and walked past.

Marina kept a forced smile on her face, walking casually beside Daron. To avoid raising any suspicion, she tried to strike up a conversation with him.

Mr. Zamora, when are we going to Sicester?she asked.

She could feel all those eyes on their backs, so she leaned in, whispering just for Daron to hear, Why didn’t you give me a headsup?

Seriously? Tomorrow? That’s so sudden,Marina thought, feeling a bit flustered.

Daron replied, I’m telling you right now.”

Marina just stared at him, lost for words.

Daron glanced down at her. What, you’re nervous about a sudden trip to Sicester? Isn’t it like your hometown?

Marina shook her head. Well, I am not.”

She was just a bit concerned about how Elnora was holding up.

Daron nodded. Good.

Marina bit her lip and asked quietly, If I do well in Sicester, can I take some time off to visit Vrufield more often?

Daron looked down at her, and there was something in his eyes Marina couldn’t quite figure out.

Her heart clenched, and she quickly put on a hopeful smile. I promise I won’t let it affect my work.”

Daron said, You’ve spent years in Sicester, and now you’re so eager to move to Vrufield. Don’t you feel even a little bit attached to Sicester?

Relief flickered in her eyes. If there’s anything I’d miss about Sicester, it’s my grandma. But she’s gone now, so there’s really nothing left for me there,Marina said softly.

Now, Elnora was the only family Marina had left.

With Elnora’s health taking a turn for the worse again, it was only natural that Marina wanted to head back to Vrufield.

Daron glanced down at her, commenting offhandedly on her words, You really are ruthless.”
