Sebastian’s hand paused ever so slightly in his work.
Serena realized she had guessed right, but…
"Why?"
That struck a nerve.
Why? He didn’t even know why himself.
After a long moment, the man lifted his head, his expression calm but serious. "You could try relying on me."
Even if I don’t have much time left to live, even if there’s nothing between us that should warrant such trust, I can still protect you. For as long as I have, I’ll do everything I can to protect you.
There was an unspoken depth in his dark eyes.
Serena’s heart gave a faint tremor.
"You won’t die," she suddenly said.
Sebastian made a questioning sound. "Hm?"
"My master once treated a woman who was allergic to men."
Noah, who had been about to slip out the door, froze, his hand still on the knob. His heart leapt as he looked at Serena intently.
Maybe… maybe Serena really could save Sebastian.
"Although she did die in the end,"
Noah nearly choked. His briefly rising hope plummeted.
"She died of cancer."
Noah quietly wiped his sweat. Serena, could you please stop with the dramatic pauses?
"Maybe I can save you too."
After all that rambling, Serena finally came to her conclusion. She only hoped it didn’t sound too abrupt to anyone else.
Sebastian suddenly understood. No wonder she had known from the very first meeting that he was allergic to women and even knew how to administer emergency aid. She had seen a case like his before.
"But…"
Noah’s heart jumped again. Serena, could you not drag things out like this?
"You have to pay me extra."
Both Noah and Sebastian were speechless.
Sebastian tapped his fingers lightly on the desk. After a pause, he said, "I fought for you."
Serena was speechless.
"Yesterday, I pulled you out of danger. Then I sent you home."
Noah nearly burst out laughing. He quickly jumped in to coax her on Sebastian’s behalf. "Ms. Serena, if it’s more than money, maybe you’ll actually get even more out of it."
Noah frowned in thought.
When Serena left the school nurse’s office, she ran into Celeste.
Celeste no longer looked dejected—she had just received Taylor’s million-dollar card. Every pore radiated superiority and smugness.
So what if Serena had strong fighters backing her? Could they hand her a million dollars without blinking like Taylor had?
Serena asked, "Didn’t get beat yesterday? Feeling itchy for it again?"
Celeste was speechless.
Damn it! She turned on her heel and walked away. Why should she waste her time arguing with such a crass, uncultured lowlife?
She had been blind before, actually seeing Serena as a threat.
The truth was, they weren’t even on the same level. What was there to worry about?
If Celeste simply studied hard and secured positions with both Horizon Research Institute and Hayes Corp, she would stand above everyone else. Serena was nothing but a noisy clown jumping around.
Before class, Celeste made another trip to Taylor’s laboratory.
She found him lying on the sofa, one hand pressed to his forehead, his shirt soaked with cold sweat, his handsome face pale with a faint gray tinge.
Celeste rushed to him. "Taylor, is it low blood sugar again?"
The untouched meal and fruit on the table gave the answer—he had forgotten to eat once more.
