OLIVE’s POV
I froze and slowly turned to look at the man standing right behind me, feeling my heartbeat suddenly start racing so fast I thought it might actually break through my ribs.
“Zane… you’re here. What are you doing here?”
I was still shocked because the last thing I’d expected was to see him at my family’s house, showing up unannounced like he had every right to be here.
But his eyes were still on the man behind me, on Alonso, and Alonso was staring back at him with equal measure, like they were sizing each other up in some silent competition I didn’t understand.
Then Zane’s eyes found mine slowly, and they looked… normal, you couldn’t find any obvious emotions in them, but that was Zane, never breaking, always on point, never faltering even when you knew something was happening beneath the surface.
“I decided to pay my girlfriend a surprise visit,” he said, stepping towards me with that confident stride that made my stomach flip. “But it seems you’re having a good time, muffin.”
His hands circled around my waist instantly, and my body smashed hard against his chest, electric sparks flying through every nerve ending, enough to make me gasp and have the overwhelming smell of his cologne flood my senses along with the feel of his tight abs pressed against me.
“Zane…”
“Shh, muffin,” he said, and this close I could see how his eyes had darkened, how they looked so different from before, not cold and not warm either, just something unexplainable that was purely Zane. “I called you three times and you didn’t
answer.”
“Zane…” I whispered, my cheeks suddenly burning hot.
I never saw it coming, his lips crashing hard against mine in a way that sent my entire body on fire, his hands wrapping tighter around my waist while his other hand palmed my ass as he kissed me like he was claiming territory, his lips trailing to my lower lip and biting down hard enough to pull a gasp from my throat.
“Oh my God, Olive…”
A voice said, breaking through our moment, and I froze realizing who it was.
I slowly pulled away from Zane, becoming aware again that Alonso was still standing there watching us, and this time he wasn’t alone, my step-cousin Vanessa was with him looking like she’d just witnessed the event of the century.
“Oh my God, is this who I think it is?” she said, her voice coming but high-pitched and excited, almost shrieking.
“And you guys are just… fuck, do you need a room or something She chuckled hard, her mouth hanging wide open, but all her attention was laser-focused on Zane like I’d suddenly become invisible.
“Vanessa…”
But her hand hovered in the air, stopping me mid-word,
Tm fucking seeing Zane Mercer in the flesh, not just in flesh bu making out with my cousin… God, Alonso, did you see all of that? It’s fucking Zane Mercer in the flesh.
I heard Zane almost chuckle before he whispered lightly into my car, his breath hot against my skin, I like her
And I shot him a side-eye that said ‘don’t encourage her.
“Yes, this is Zane, you’ve said that like three times now,” I said, trying to stop her before she did something stupid like walking up to Zane and asking him inappropriate questions about his body or his life,
“Oh come on, Olive, you don’t need to get all possessive,” she whined, actually whined like a literal baby.
“Alonso, it’s nice to meet you, maybe you need to take her inside
“No, no, you don’t get to do that, Olive,” Vanessa interrupted, stumbling slightly. “Just because I mentioned that you deserved this, all of this, doesn’t mean I actually meant it, I just wanted you to feel comfortable because how did you even get him and
“Enough, Vanessa, that’s enough,” Alonso said, his voice firm as he grabbed her by her arms and picked her up like she weighed absolutely nothing. “Come on, you’ve had enough to drink.”
