Niamh tilted her head back, her eyes reflecting Jonathan’s grim expression. “And this is what you call being able to protect yourself?”
The blunt question left her speechless. If the person aiming at her had really been Joker, she would likely be dead right now if not for Jonathan. A shiver of delayed fear ran through her.
The next second, his arms tightened around her. The dress Niamh had chosen was made of a thin fabric, which had become nearly transparent after being submerged in water. Pressed against Jonathan’s body, she felt as if she were naked, enveloped by his warmth and scent. The sensation filled her with a mixture of shame and panic.
“If you keep holding me like this, we’ll be tabloid gold by morning,” she reminded him quietly.
Jonathan managed a small smile. “Let them talk. Maybe the internet will start a campaign for us to get back together.”
“Get back together?” Niamh let out a cold laugh. “You wish. You think saving my life means I’m going to throw myself at you?”
Her words were laced with sarcasm, but her heart was undeniably moved. After all, if the assassin had pulled the trigger in that split second, the bullet would have hit Jonathan as he threw himself toward her. His reaction had been instantaneous; a moment’s hesitation, and the shot would have rung out, the killer would have succeeded, and she would have died right here.
Did he do it… because he remembered she was Rina from the detention center?
The two bodyguards Niamh had hired stood by, not daring to argue. At the poolside, Jonathan’s reaction had been far quicker than theirs. And if the sniper had fired, Jonathan could have been the one who died. Had that happened, they would have been implicated, and they knew they could disappear from the face of the earth without a trace. They exchanged a knowing glance, then stepped forward to resign. They didn't even ask for their pay.
In the blink of an eye, Niamh was without her bodyguards. She shot a glare at Jonathan, who looked back, genuinely baffled. “It’s not like I threatened them… Let’s just say they know how to read a room.”
“Then I guess I’m the one who doesn’t,” Niamh muttered, turning to walk away.
“Niamh, I’m not asking for anything… I just want to protect you…”,
