Niamh was stunned by Elmer's suggestion.
"I..."
"Just try it on!"
Niamh wanted to refuse, but Elmer was insistent.
"I want to be the one to put it on you."
With that, Elmer picked up a vintage-style gold diamond ring and took Niamh’s hand. A wave of awkwardness washed over Niamh. They were in her brand's flagship store, with the manager and staff watching their every move. It was clear Elmer was indulging in the fantasy of placing a diamond ring on her finger himself. The man before her was smiling, his eyes crinkling gently, his every move exuding a refined, gentlemanly grace. Niamh couldn't bring herself to refuse.
As Elmer slowly slid the vintage gold ring onto Niamh's ring finger, a few of the spying shop assistants grew as excited as if they were the ones being proposed to.
"Hey, do you think Dr. White is about to propose to our boss?"
"They've been together for so long, isn't it about time they got married?"
"But I heard Dr. White is still chasing her, that he hasn't won her over yet!"
"No way... they're here picking out diamond rings together. You expect me to believe he hasn't won her over? I don't buy it."
While the assistants were whispering excitedly, Elmer placed another ring, this one with an exotic design, onto Niamh's finger.
"That one's beautiful too!"
"Well, our boss is gorgeous, and her hands are perfectly shaped."
Before they could say more, they all felt a sudden chill in the air. Or perhaps it was more like a murderous aura. The shop assistants turned in unison toward the source of the chilling feeling.
"That person... couldn't be Mr. Thomas, could it?"
"Which Mr. Thomas?"
"He just seems so gentle and considerate, a good family man... Mr. Thomas, on the other hand, is too intimidating."
"Exactly! And I heard they divorced because he cheated..."
"Oh my god, a scumbag! In that case, I vote for Dr. White too."
Though the assistants were hidden behind the screen, every single word of their conversation drifted straight into Jonathan's ears. He clenched his hands into tight fists. He desperately wanted to tell them he hadn't cheated. But then he remembered how he and Marina had appeared everywhere together, and he knew any defense would be utterly unconvincing. The truth is often just what people choose to believe, regardless of the facts. Jonathan rubbed his temples, feeling a splitting headache coming on. He watched, eyes wide open, as Elmer placed one ring after another on Niamh's left ring finger, wondering why he was torturing himself like this.
Elmer finally stopped after having Niamh try on more than twenty different diamond rings.
"Had your fun?" Niamh asked with a wry smile.
"Thank you for doing this with me," Elmer replied, his smile filled with gratitude... and a hint of bitterness. It seemed this was the only way he would ever get to place a ring on her finger.
Only after Niamh and Elmer had left did Jonathan emerge silently from behind the screen. The female staff gazed at him as if he were a movie star. Jonathan sighed, the feelings of defeat and loss leaving him disoriented. Just as he was about to leave, his gaze was inadvertently drawn to something in a display case.
