Why was that?
Preston stroked his chin, thinking. "Oh, I know! It's because Niamh doesn't like either of you."
By the time Preston realized he'd said that out loud, both Jonathan and Michael had been glaring at him for a solid minute.
"What? It's the truth!" Preston said, scratching the back of his head. The problem was, Niamh didn't like him either. The thought made him sigh in despair.
Jonathan took a sip of wine and spoke calmly. "Are you going to tell me? What's the real reason you asked me out today?"
Michael propped his chin on his hand and tilted his head. "Can't a guy just miss you?"
The comment made Preston spit out his wine, choking and coughing.
"Too bad. The only one I'm missing is Preston," Jonathan said, clapping a hand on Preston's shoulder, making his face twitch.
Michael burst out laughing before finally getting to the point. "It's nothing major. You probably already know that Niamh's original jewelry brand is planning a collaboration with that sci-fi novelist who just won the Hugo Award..."
"Zhang Felix. I've read his book, *Galactic Echoes*..." Preston interjected, then muttered to himself, "Although, I always thought his storytelling style was a bit like GloomThorn's."
"And who is GloomThorn?" Michael asked curiously.
"You don't read web novels? GloomThorn is a top author on the Nexus Sci-Fi platform!"
Michael gave Preston a look of complete exasperation. "No wonder your dad is always scolding you for not focusing on your work."
"How is reading novels not focusing? What if I end up buying Nexus one day!"
"Damn it!" Preston couldn't help but curse.
"I finally decided to give up on Niamh," Michael said, adjusting his glasses with a self-deprecating smile. "The last thing I need is to see her and have all those old feelings rush back."
"Niamh never had any 'old feelings' for you," Jonathan said bluntly.
Michael shot him a glare and fired back, "True. I'm not like you. For Niamh, you're nothing but old feelings."
There was a sharp crack as Jonathan's hand tightened, shattering the wine glass. The atmosphere at the table grew tense, and Preston began to regret coming.
Michael stood up and walked back toward the course to continue his game. Jonathan shook the glass shards from his hand, pulled out his phone, and dialed Niamh's number. The call didn't go through. After a moment's thought, he called Prescott instead.
Meanwhile, Niamh had just landed. She was here to attend Felix's book signing.
