He finally roared into the phone, and at last, Elmer spoke. “Can you leave the hospital?” “…” “You’re not still stuck in bed, are you?” “…” This time, it was Jonathan’s turn to be silent. “Call me when you’ve recovered.” Elmer hung up, and Jonathan’s arm fell limply to his side.
Everyone was telling him to rest. No one would tell him how Niamh was. Picking up his phone again, Jonathan called Niamh directly. As expected, the call wouldn’t go through.
Jonathan stayed in the hospital for another week and a half before his body was finally well enough for discharge. During that time, he heard nothing about Niamh.
The day he was released, he contacted Elmer. “You told me to call you when I was better. I’m better now.” Listening to Jonathan’s voice over the phone, Elmer thought he still sounded incredibly weak. “Have your driver bring you to my office building.” “Okay.”
Jonathan forwarded the address Elmer sent him to Prescott. Prescott recognized it as Elmer's workplace. “Mr. Thomas…” “Cut the crap,” Jonathan said, his tone decisive and leaving no room for argument. Prescott sighed and, complying with the order, drove Jonathan to Elmer’s office.
Elmer was just walking out of the building as they pulled up. “You can go back,” Jonathan commanded Prescott. Prescott looked like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he just drove the deep gray Koenigsegg away.
By Elmer’s count, it had been nearly two months since he’d last seen Jonathan. Two months wasn’t long enough to make a person unrecognizable, but looking at the man before him, Elmer genuinely had trouble placing him.
