Chapter 205

Dominic’s POV

Florence felt different. Heavier. Not because of the city itself, but because of what it represented now. Obligation. Expectation. Power that didn’t belong entirely to me.

By the time I stepped into the Moretti estate that Alessia’s family had recently bought in Florence with Alessia beside me, I could already feel it settling over my shoulders again.

Her father was waiting when we walked into the living room. Of course he was. He wasn’t a man who liked wasting time.

“Dominic,” he greeted, his tone polite but carrying that familiar undercurrent of authority wrapped in civility. “I hear you’re back in Florence.”

“I am,” I replied evenly.

His gaze flicked briefly to Alessia, then back to me. “Good. Then we can finally finalize the wedding date,” he said, straight to the point. No pretense. No delay.

Alessia shifted beside me. “Actually,” she began lightly, “Dominic thinks we should take a little more time-”

Her father’s eyes snapped to me, sharp, questioning. And beneath that, a warning.

I met his gaze without hesitation, didn’t look away, didn’t soften.

“Alessia deserves a grand wedding,” I said calmly.

Silence followed my words. I could feel the weight of his attention on me, testing me, measuring every word.

“And rushing something like this,” I continued, “wouldn’t do that justice.”

A beat.

“I’ve seen how much thought she’s been putting into it,” I added.

That was a lie. I didn’t know shit about what she had been planning, nor did I care. But he didn’t need to know that.

“And I want her to have everything exactly the way she wants.”

Alessia’s head turned towards me slightly, clearly surprised. Her father’s expression didn’t change immediately.

But I saw that small shift, the calculation. And that was exactly the opening I needed. “It’s her big day. And I want it to be the best for her,” I said, putting a healthy dose of emotion into my voice.

“We all want that. But what you’re saying means we will have to delay,” he said slowly.

“I’m saying we do it properly,” I replied.

Another pause.

Then her mother spoke. “That’s very thoughtful of you, Dominic,” she said warmly. “Alessia has been planning this for a long time. It’s nice to see you value that.”

Her father glanced at her. Then back at me.

And finally, he nodded. “Very well,” he said. “But not indefinitely.”

“Of course not,” I replied.

Alessia stepped in smoothly. “We’ll finalize everything soon,” she said with a soft smile. “There are still a few things we need to decide anyway.”

Her father studied us for another moment. Then gave a short nod. “Keep me informed.”

“Of course,” she said.

And just like that, the tension eased. At least on the surface. But I felt it. That pressure hadn’t gone anywhere. It had just shifted. Delayed. Not removed.

Alessia didn’t waste a second after that. The moment we were out of the room, she took my hand and pulled me along.

‘Come,” she said. “I need to show you everything.”

I let her, not resisting or arguing. Because it was easier that way.

Her room was immaculate as always, carefully curated to her taste even in their new Villa.

She sat me down and immediately started pulling out folders, fabric samples, pictures.

This is the color palette I was thinking,” she said, spreading things out in front of me. “And these are the floral irrangements. I haven’t finalized them yet because I wanted your input.”

I nodded. “Looks good.”

She smiled. “And this-” she continued, picking up another sheet, “—is for the main hall. I was thinking something elegant but not too overwhelming. What do you think?”

I glanced at it but didn’t really see it. “Yeah,” I said. “That works.”

She kept talking. Details. Colors. Designs. Venues.

And I simply nodded. Listened. Responded just enough. But my mind wasn’t there.

It kept drifting. Back to Milan. To Isa. To the way she had looked at me the last time. Angry. Hurt. Afraid.

I don’t trust her around my son. Her words echoed in my mind, sharp and clear.

My jaw tightened slightly.

What was she doing right now? Had she calmed down? Was she still angry at me? Had she eaten? Was she resting?

My hand moved almost automatically to my phone.

I typed quickly.

Everything okay there? I sent it to Marco.

A second later, another message: Keep a close watch.

I received a reply seconds later.

Everything is fine, Boss.

I nodded to myself. Good.

Then I found Isa’s name.

My thumb hovered for a moment.

Then I typed: How are you feeling? Do you need anything?

Sent.

I stared at the screen for a few seconds.

No reply. Of course not. Not after the way she had spoken to me. Not after everything.

I exhaled slowly, slipping the phone back into my pocket.

I would have to fix that later when I got back.

Maybe do something simple. Something thoughtful.

She responded to that, always had. Before things got this complicated.

“You’re not even listening to me.” Alessia’s voice cut through my thoughts.

I looked up. She was watching me now. Not smiling. Not amused.

“You are,” she said, “but you’re not actually hearing anything I’m saying.”

I leaned back slightly. “I’m listening.”

She tilted her head. “Then what did I just say?”

I paused briefly.”…. About the hall decorations.”

Her expression didn’t change, not impressed, not convinced.

“I said we might need to change the entire venue,” she said flatly.

A beat.

I almost sighed. “I’m listening,” I repeated.

The words felt hollow even to me.

She watched me for another second. Then her expression softened again. Like she chose to let it go. Or pretended to.

“Okay,” she said lightly. “Then tell me what you think about this one.”

She kept going. More designs. More plans. More details.

And I kept nodding, responding. Present, but not really.
