**Chapter 113**
**Claire’s POV**
As soon as they erupted from the dense tree line, I sprang into action, my heart racing like a wild drum. But Elijah and Theo were already mere flashes of fur and muscle darting through the underbrush, leaving me in their wake.
The branches whipped against my arms, sharp and biting, while the gnarled roots of the forest floor threatened to trip me up at every turn. Yet, I pushed myself harder, my lungs screaming for air as my wolf’s instincts urged me onward. The rhythmic pounding of paws against the earth echoed ahead, a reminder of their relentless speed, growing fainter with each passing second.
Theo was surprisingly swift, much faster than I had anticipated for someone whose scent was a jarring blend of fear and guilt. Elijah, of course, was a force to be reckoned with—faster than most—but even he seemed to struggle to close the gap as quickly as I imagined. Perhaps the stab wound still lingered, or maybe the adrenaline that had propelled him this far was beginning to wane.
In a flash, Ethan soared past me, a blur of fur and power, shifting mid-stride. His wolf’s massive form sent a shower of leaves cascading from the branches above as he surged forward, rapidly narrowing the space between him and Elijah. For a brief moment, a flicker of relief washed over me, but it was fleeting.
Theo showed no signs of slowing down.
Time seemed to lose all meaning as I raced through the forest, and then, out of nowhere, a sharp crack shattered the stillness. I watched in horror as Theo’s wolf stumbled over something hidden beneath the foliage—perhaps a fallen branch or a decaying stump—and went tumbling forward, his body sprawling unceremoniously across the ground.
Before I could even blink, Elijah’s wolf leaped into action.
The collision was deafening, a jarring sound that made my heart pound violently against my ribs. Elijah struck Theo with the full force of an enraged alpha, his fangs bared, claws raking fiercely across Theo’s side. Theo whimpered, his legs thrashing in a desperate attempt to fight back, but he was no match for Elijah’s wrath—he was simply too slow, too weak, and utterly unprepared for the fury that had been unleashed.
By the time Ethan and I reached the scene, a gruesome trail of blood marked the once-pristine fur of Theo, who lay trembling beneath Elijah, his breaths shallow and desperate.
Then, Ethan raised his head and howled.
The sound reverberated through the forest like a tempest, an alpha command so potent it seemed to shake the very leaves from their perches above. It was more than just a sound; it was a force, a wave of dominance that pressed against my skin, compelling my knees to bend toward the earth even before I had the chance to process what was happening.
I found myself bowing, unable to resist the primal urge. Everyone around us did the same.
Elijah’s wolf hesitated for a brief moment, a heartbeat of defiance where I genuinely feared he might challenge Ethan’s authority. But then, with a low growl of resistance, he finally relented, lowering himself in submission to the alpha’s command.
Ethan prowled forward, an imposing figure radiating fury, shifting seamlessly as he reached Elijah. The transformation back to his human form was swift, yet the anger that enveloped him remained palpable. His voice sliced through the air, harsher than I had ever heard it—raw, jagged, and filled with a fury that made me shiver.
“Elijah. Shift. Now.”
Elijah complied, but the moment he did, I instinctively turned my gaze away, granting him the slightest semblance of privacy, even as my heart raced from the chaos that had just unfolded.
Ethan didn’t wait for Elijah to gather himself. He didn’t wait for anything.
He unleashed a roar.
The sound tore through the trees, reverberating in my chest and shaking Elijah to his core. It was far from the calm, diplomatic tone Ethan usually wielded; this was something deeper, something cold and profoundly disappointed, laced with a fury so fierce I could hardly believe Elijah remained standing beneath its weight.
Ethan stepped closer, towering over Elijah, his face twisted in a rage I had never witnessed before. “What were you thinking? Do you believe it’s acceptable to attack anyone without cause? We had a clear plan, yet you let your anger dictate your actions! When will you learn to control that deadly weapon of yours?!”
I blinked in shock, stunned into silence. I had never seen Ethan this furious, not ever.
But Elijah remained silent.
