…so if Reed tries that same cross-check again, you drop the gloves and end it early,” Coach barked, pacing in front of the projector screen with the remote clenched in his fist.

The film was paused on a freeze-frame of Ridgeview’s captain smirking after a late hit last year, the kind of cheap play that left bruises for weeks. “We’re not starting anything, but we’re sur as hell finishing it. Understood?”

“Yes, Coach,” we answered in unison, the words rumbling through the locker room like a single growl.

I nodded along with the rest of the team, but my mind was already halfway out the door.

Practice had been brutal, two full hours of full-contact scrimmage that left bruises blooming under my pads and itching for a real fight.

my wolf

Ridgeview was tomorrow night, and everything rode on it: scout in the stands, pack pride on the line, the chance to finally shut Mason Reed’s mouth for good.

Coach dismissed us with a final warning about curfew and nutrition, his voice still echoing as guys started peeling off gear.

I took my time in the shower, letting the hot water ease the knots in my shoulders and wash away the sweat.

Most of the team was already talking about grabbing food, hyping each other up for the bus ride tomorrow.

Felix lingered by the lockers, towel around his neck, unlacing his skates with quick, practiced jerks.

“Late brunch?” he asked, wiping his face with the hem of his jersey. “Cafeteria’s doing those breakfast burritos before next period. I’m starving.”

“Yeah,” I said, pulling on my hoodie. “Let’s go.”

We threw on clean clothes and headed out together, the cold air hitting us as we left the rink.

The hallway outside was quiet, most kids already in class or at lunch.

Snow fell in lazy flakes under the floodlights as we crossed the parking lot toward the main building, our boots crunching on the thin layer of ice.

A sleek black sedan pulled smoothly into the visitor spot near the front doors, tires quiet on the snow,

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Dr. Adrian.

He stepped out of the car, adjusting his coat against the chill, briefcase in hand, and headed straight for the main entrance like he had every right to be there.

My wolf snarled before I could stop it, a low rumble in my chest hat Felix definitely heard.

What the hell was he doing at school again?

Felix glanced back when he realized I wasn’t following. “You coming, Cap?”

“In a minute,” I muttered, pulling out my phone with fingers that felt suddenly cold.

Me: Dr. Adrian just pulled into school. Everything okay? Text me if anything comes up.

I stared at the screen, waiting for the three dots that would mean she was replying. Nothing. My skin prickled with unease, the wolf pacing harder inside me.

Felix raised an eyebrow. “You good?”

“Yeah. Go ahead. I’ll catch up.”

He shrugged and kept walking, disappearing through the doors.

I watched Adrian vanish inside the building, then forced myself to follow at a distance. Brunch. Eat.

Come back and check on her. That was the plan.

Nothing was probably wrong.

Just a routine thing. Right?

The cafeteria was half-empty, seniors with free periods loading ways with whatever was left from breakfast service.

Felix grabbed two burritos and slid into a booth near the window snow still falling softly outside. I sat across from him, unwrapping mine but not really tasting it as I ate mechanically.

He took a huge bite, chewing thoughtfully before leaning forward, elbows on the table. “So. I’ve been meaning to ask you something for weeks now.”

I chewed, waiting, my mind still on that black sedan.

“It’s about Claire.”

My fork paused halfway to my mouth. Every muscle in my body went rigid, the wolf surging forward so fast my vision. flickered gold for a split second.

“What about her?” I asked, voice coming out flatter than I intended.

He wiped his hands on a napkin, looking almost nervous, which wasn’t like Felix at all. “I asked her out a while back. She turned me down. Polite, but firm. But I was thinking… maybe try again? You live with her, man. You’d know what she likes, right? Favorite coffee order, flowers, that kind of thing. Help a guy out?”

The air left my lungs in a rush.

Bro, what the fuck?

The words burned on my tongue, hot and sharp and ready to explode.

My wolf surged forward, claws pricking under my skin, vision tunneling with possessive rage.

I wanted to flip the table, grab him by the jersey, tell him she was mine-mine to protect, mine to love, mine in every way that mattered.

But I couldn’t.

We were secret. One wrong word, one slip, and everything blew p.

Family, school, pack-everything we had built so carefully would come crashing down.

So I just looked at him, jaw clenched so tight it ached.

Felix shifted uncomfortably under my stare. “Come on, Elijah. You see her every day. Breakfast, dinner, homework at the kitchen table. You’ve gotta have some idea what would work.”
