The fluorescent lights of the biology lab hummed with a monotnous drone that was somehow more exhausting than a tactical briefing.

I stared at the diagram of a mitochondria on the whiteboard, trying to convince myself that the “powerhouse of the cell” was the most important thing in my world right now.

Beside me, Elijah was leaning back in his stool, his long legs stretched out under the lab table.

He was twirling a scalpel between his fingers with a casual, terrifying grace that had our lab partner, a quiet boy named Leo, looking like he wanted to bolt for the emergency shower.

“You’re scaring him, El,” I whispered, nudging his arm.

Elijah glanced at Leo, then back at the scalpel, realizing he was treating a piece of medical equipment like a combat knife.

He set it down with a faint clatter. “Sorry. Old habits.”

“Rough weekend?” Leo squeaked, trying to be brave.

Elijah’s eyes flickered to mine-a shared, secret gold. “You could say that. Cabin trip got a little intense. Too many predators in the woods.”

“Oh. Right. Like… bears?” Leo asked.

“Something like that,” Elijah muttered, turning his attention back to the microscope.

I tried to focus on the slide, but the air in the room felt thick again. It wasn’t the toxic silver-mist of the distillery, but something else-a social pressure.

Ever since we’d walked through the front doors this morning, the school felt like it was tilting on its axis.

The power vacuum left by the Reeds wasn’t just a political problem for Ethan and Silas; it was a social one for us.

“Hey, Claire,” a girl from the back row whispered, leaning over her lab manual. “Is it true? About the Reeds moving to a ‘private academy’ in the city? My dad said they didn’t even pack their cars. Just… vanished.”

I felt Elijah’s posture stiffen beside me. I reached under the table resting my hand on his knee to keep him grounded. “That’s what the school board said,” I replied, keeping my voice light. “I guess when you have that much money, you just buy new clothes when you get there.”

The girl didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push. Nobody pushed anymore, especially with Elijah Hale sitting there looking like he could dismantle the building with his bare hands if he got bored.

The bell finally rang, signaling the end of the period. As we gathered our things, I saw her again.

The new girl from the library was standing in the hallway, leaning against a row of lockers directly across from our classroom.

Up close, she was even more striking. Her skin was a deep olive, and her eyes were a sharp, piercing green that seemed to take in everything at once.

She wasn’t wearing the typical Red Pine gear-no flannel, no heavy boots. She wore a sleek, black leather jacket and boots that looked like they cost more than my first car.

She waited until the crowd thinned out, then she stepped directly into our path.

“Elijah Hale,” she said. Her voice was smooth, with a faint accent couldn’t quite place-something older, more refined, “And Claire. The girl with the heart of gold. Literally.”

Elijah stepped in front of me instinctively, his arm shielding my chest. “Who are you?”

“My name is Valerius. But you can call me Val,” she said, offering a sharp, white-toothed smile. “My family just took over the lease on the North Ridge estate. The one the Reeds… vacated. My father is an old acquaintance of Silas. He sent me ahead to make sure the ‘neighborhood’ was as lively as the rumors suggested.”

I felt the air around Elijah turn cold. The North Ridge estate wasn’t just a house; it was the seat of power for the secondary bloodline.

For someone to move in so quickly meant the High Council had fast-tracked their arrival.

“We don’t need any more ‘lively’ neighbors,” Elijah said, his voice dropping into that dangerous Alpha-Heir growl. “We’re full up on drama.”

Val laughed, a light, melodic sound that didn’t match the predatory look in her eyes. “Oh, I’m not here for drama, Elijah. I’m here for education. And maybe to see if the Hale line is as strong as the Elders claim. Saving a mate from a silver-trap is quite the story. It’s reached as far as the Southern packs.”

“The Southern packs?” I asked, stepping out from behind Elijah. Why are they talking about us?”

Val turned her green eyes on me. There was no malice in them, but there was a profound curiosity. “Because, Claire, you’re a walking impossibility. A lowly

girl surviving a bond-merger under chemical duress? That doesn’t happen. It makes people wonder if the Red Pine has found a new kind of power. Or a new kind of weakness.”

“Is that a threat?” Elijah stepped closer, his golden eyes flaring.

“Not at all,” Val said, raising her hands in a mocking gesture of surrender. “I’m just a transfer student trying to find her way to Western Civ. But I would keep an eye on the borders if I were you. My family isn’t the only one curious about the vacancy Thomas Reed left behind.”

She winked at me, then turned and sauntered down the hall, her leather jacket creaking softly.

“I don’t like her,” Elijah hissed, watching her go.

“She’s a wolf,” I said, the realization hitting me. “But she’s not like the ones here. She’s… different.”

“She’s a Sentinel-born,” Felix said, appearing behind us and scaring the life out of me. He was looking at Val’s retreating figure with a rare expression of concern. “I recognize the crest of her jacket. The Valerius family. They’re the Council’s ‘enforcers.’ If they’re here, it means the High Council doesn’t trust Ethan to keep the territory stable after the massacre at the distillery.”

“Great,” Elijah muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. “More babysitters.”

“Not babysitters,” Felix corrected. “Auditors. They’re here to see if we’re fit to lead, El. And they’re starting with you.”

The rest of the afternoon felt like walking through a minefield. Everywhere we went, Val was there-at the edge of the cafeteria, in the back of the gym, watching us from the shadows of the library.

She didn’t say anything else, but her presence was a constant reminder that our “victory” had consequences.

We had cleared the board of the Reeds, but the board was no longer empty.

By the time the final bell rang. I was exhausted. The high of the actory had worn off, replaced by the weight of a new, more subtle kind of war.

“Let’s go to the rink.” I said to Elijah as we walked to the truck. “I need to see you play. I need to remember what normal feels

like.”

“Normal” Elijah laughed bitterly, opening the truck door for me I’m starting to think that’s the one thing we’re never going to get. Claire.”

As we pulled out of the parking lot. I looked in the rearview mirror. Val was standing by the entrance, her arms crossed, watching the black truck disappear down the road.

She wasn’t a hunter like Mason, and she wasn’t a politician like Thomas. She was a witness.

And I had the feeling that what she was about to witness was going to change the Red Pine forever.

“Elijah?” I asked as we hit the main road.

Yeah

How much do you know about the Southern packs?”

Elijah was silent for a long time, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Not enough. But my father always said they don’t value the bond the way we do. To them, it’s about bloodlines and power. Nothing else.

“Then we’ll show them something else.” I said, reaching over to take his hand.
