The “Midnight Diner” was a relic of chrome and neon tucked into a valley curve, usually the safest haven for the Red Pine pack.

It was where we went to celebrate wins, nurse bruises, and argue over whether the ‘Gut-Buster Burger” was worth the three days of indigestion.

But tonight, as Elijah and I pushed through the heavy glass doors, the atmosphere was thick enough to make my skin itch.

Felix and Jax were already shoved into a corner booth, but they weren’t laughing.

They were sitting straight-backed, their eyes flicking toward the center of the room where Val and her father, Marcus Valerius, sat at a table that seemed to have its own weather system.

“So much for a quiet burger,” Elijah muttered, his hand dropping to the small of my back.

His touch was grounding, but I could feel the tension vibrating through him—a low-frequency hum of a wolf ready to defend his territory.

Marcus Valerius didn’t look like a villain. He looked like an executive-clean-shaven, salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a cashmere coat that cost more than the diner’s entire inventory.

He was cutting into a steak with surgical precision, but the moment we stepped into the light, he stopped.

“The heir,” Marcus said, his voice a smooth, cultured baritone that cut through the sound of the sizzling grill. “And the miracle. Please, don’t let us interrupt your evening. We were just sampling the local… flavor.”

Val sat across from him, sipping a milkshake with an expression of pure, unadulterated mischief.

She gave me a little wave with two fingers, her green eyes bright with the thrill of the trap.

“Sit with us, Elijah,” Marcus invited, gesturing to the empty chairs. It wasn’t a request; it was an Alpha-tier command disguised as a courtesy.

Elijah’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek. He looked at Felix and Jax, who were watching him for a cue.

If he refused, it was a slight against a Council envoy. If he sat, he was playing their game.

“Claire is hungry,” Elijah said, his voice flat. “We’ll sit. But we’re not staying long.”

We slid into the booth next to them. The air was charged, the scent of cloves and garlic from Marcus clashing with the cedar and iron of Elijah.

I sat close to Elijah, our shoulders touching, my heart a steady 78 bpm. I refused to let the rhythm break.

“My daughter tells me you had a spirited practice tonight,”

Marcus said, his eyes finally settling on me. “She also tells me that you, Claire, are remarkably well-integrated into the pack life for someone who… wasn’t born to it.”

“I learn fast,” I replied, meeting his gaze. “And the Red Pine is a good teacher.”

“Is it?” Marcus leaned back, his eyes narrowing. “Because from where I sit, the Red Pine looks like a territory that has forgotten its foundations. You’ve exiled your strongest secondary line, your borders are porous, and your future Alpha is more concerned with hockey scores than the rising tensions in the South.”

“The Reeds weren’t our foundation,” Elijah countered, his voice dropping into a lethal register. They were a rot. We cut the rot out so the pack could breathe. And if the South wants to test our borders, they’ll find out that we breathe just fine.”

Marcus chuckled, but it wasn’t a warm sound. “Bold words. But words don’t stop the Southern Sentinels. They see a weak mate as a vulnerability, Elijah. They see her as a tether that keeps you from reaching your full potential as a Prime.”

“She’s not a tether,” Elijah hissed, the gold in his eyes beginning to bleed through. “She’s the reason I have anything worth fighting for.”

The diner went dead silent. Even the cook stopped scraping the grill.

The weight of Elijah’s claim hit the room like a physical shock. In the world of the High Council, vulnerability was a death sentence, but Elijah was wearing his like a crown.

Val leaned forward, her elbows on the table. That’s the part they don’t get. Dad. He’s not protecting her because he has to He’s protecting her because she’s his battery. I saw it on the ice. He’s not playing for himself; he’s playing for the heart in her

chest.

Marcus watched us for a long moment, the silence stretching until it felt like the glass in the windows might shatter from the

pressure.

Then, he picked up his napkin and patted his mouth.

“A romantic sentiment,” Marcus said softly. “But the Council deals in stability, not romance. I will be at the game on Friday night, Elijah. I want to see this new frequency’ Silas mentioned. If you can’t maintain control under the spotlight of a stadium, then the Council will have no choice but to appoint a Regent to oversee the North Ridge.”

“A Regent?” I asked, the word tasting like ash. “You mean a replacement for the Reeds.”

A supervisor, Marcus corrected, standing up.

“Someone to ensure the Hale line doesn’t crumble under the weight of its own…. eccentricities.”

He nodded to Val, who slid out of the booth with a smirk. “See you at the rink, Claire. Try not to let your heart skip a beat. It might be the only thing keeping your boyfriend from leveling the building.”

They walked out, the bell over the door chiming with a cheerful sound that felt like a mockery.

The second they were gone, the diner exhaled. Felix and Jax scrambled over to our table, their faces pale.

“A Regent?” Felix whispered, his voice cracking. “They can’t do that. Ethan would never allow it.”

“If the Council deems us unstable, Ethan doesn’t have a choice, Elijah said, his hands shaking slightly as he let go of the

table.

He turned to me, his eyes full of a raw, jagged desperation. They’re going to use the game, Claire. They’re going to try to provoke me in front of everyone to show I’m out of control.”

“Then we don’t give it to them,” I said, taking his face in my hands. “We play our game. Not theirs.”

“They don’t know who they’re messing with,” Jax growled, slamming a fist into his palm.

“We’re the Red Pine. We don’t break.”
