Claire’s POV

The southern marsh was not exactly the romantic getaway Elijal had promised when we first started dating.

It was cold, damp, and smelled vaguely like a wet dog that had rolled in ancient cabbage.

“Remind me again why the ‘sacred energy’ of the pack chooses to hang out in a swamp?” I asked. I was trying to pull my boot out of a particularly stubborn patch of mud. It made a loud shloop sound as it finally came free.

Elijah, who was currently balancing on a fallen log like a professional gymnast, looked back at me with a smirk. “It’s about the mineral deposits, Claire. And the solitude. Most people don’t come down here to look for ancient power sources because, well, it’s a swamp.”

“Exactly,” Felix whispered from behind us. He was carrying a waterproof case like it was a newborn baby. “I have three different types of mosquito repellent on right now, and I’m still pretty sure something the size of a sparrow just bit my

neck.”

“Focus, Felix,” Elijah said, though his eyes were dancing with amusement. “We’re close. The platform should be just around

this bend.”

We moved through the tall, grey sawgrass. The air was thick with mist, making everything look like a scene from a low- budget horror movie.

But then, the trees opened up.

In the middle of a black-water pond sat a sleek, metal structure. It looked like a miniature oil rig, painted a matte black that swallowed the moonlight.

“There it is,” I said, checking my wrist comms. “The Iron Well. And look at the top. That’s a Southern-grade antenna.”

“They’re not just siphoning energy,” Felix noted, opening his laptop case. The glow from the screen lit up his face. “They’re broadcasting. They’re using the Well as a signal booster for their tracker network.”

“Can you platform.

shut it down?” Elijah asked. He stepped to the edge of the water, his body tensing as he looked for a way onto the

“I can,” Felix said. He started typing at a speed that made my head spin. “But the bridge to the platform is retracted. And the water is deep. Also, there are definitely things in that water that have more teeth than I do.”

“I’ll handle the bridge,” Elijah said. He looked at me. “Stay here with Felix. If anything moves in the grass, scream.”

“I have a tactical knife and a heart monitor that doubles as a tase Elijah. I think I can handle a swamp rat,” I teased.

He grinned, then took a running start. He leaped across fifteen feet of open water, landing on the metal grating with a loud clang.

He didn’t even wobble. He reached down, found the manual release, and a narrow metal walkway slid out toward us.

“Show-off,” I muttered, but I smiled as I followed Felix onto the Matform.

The air on the structure felt different. It was vibrating. It wasn’t a bad feeling-it felt like the hum of a distant engine, but it was coming from deep underground. It felt like the earth was breathing.

“This is it,” I whispered, kneeling over the central grate. “The Well.”

“Okay, I’m into their system,” Felix said. He was sitting cross-legged on the metal floor. “Wow. These guys are really

paranoid. The firewall is named ‘Cerberus Subtle, right?”

“How long, Felix?” Elijah asked. He was pacing the perimeter, his eyes scanning the fog-covered marsh.

“Give me five minutes,” Felix said. “I’m going to loop the security feed and then drop the frequency shield. Once the shield is down, Claire, you can plug in the scrambler.”

I’m ready,” I said, holding the small device Elijah and I had built in the garage.

Suddenly, a low whistle echoed across the water. It wasn’t a bird. It was a human whistle-sharp and rhythmic.

Elijah froze. “Someone’s here.

I looked toward the shore. A tall figure emerged from the mist. He wasn’t wearing a leather jacket like Val.

He was wearing a tailored grey suit that looked completely out of place in a swamp. He was holding a flashlight, but he wasn’t shining it at us. He was shining it at the ground.

“That must be Julian.” I whispered, my heart rate climbing. 85 bpm.

The man stopped at the edge of the water. He looked up at the platform. Even from this distance. I could see he was smiling. It wasn’t a mean smile-it was the smile of someone who had just found a lost set of keys.

“Good evening!” Julian called out. His voice was bright and friendly. “I didn’t realize the local youth enjoyed marsh-walking at four in the morning. Is this a school project?”

Elijah stepped to the edge of the platform. “You’re trespassing om Hale land. Julian.”

“Am I?” Julian asked, stepping onto the mud-slicked bank. I was told this was a Council-regulated research site. I’m just here to check the meters. My name is Julian. by the way. I’m a friend of Marcus

We know who you are.” Elijah said. His voice was like a cold wind. And we know what you’re doing.”

Julian laughed. It was a pleasant, easy sound. “Oh. I doubt that. But I must say, you Hales are much more active than the reports suggested. And you must be Claire! The girl everyone is talking about. You look much healthier than the medical files described.”

“I feel great.” I called back. “Especially when people stay off our property.”

Julian took a step toward the water. “Well, as much as I’d love to that. I really do need to see that platform. If you’ll just lower the bridge…”

“Not happening,” Elijah said.

“See, that’s the thing about us Southerners,” Julian said, his tone still light. “We don’t really like no for an answer. It makes us feel… unappreciated.”

He reached into his jacket, but he didn’t pull out a gun. He pulled out a small, silver coin. He flipped it into the air, caught it, and then dropped it into the water.

Immediately, the water around the platform began to boil.

“Felix! Hurry! I shouted.

“Almost… got… it! Felix yelled back. His fingers were a blur. “Shield is down! Claire, go!”

I slammed the scrambler into the port. A bright gold light flashed, and the humming sound changed from a low drone to a musical chord. The violet light on the antenna turned a soft, glowing amber.

“It’s done!” I cried.

On the shore, Julian’s smile faltered for just a second. He looked at his phone, which was now glowing with a “Signal Lost” message.

“Well Julian said, sighing. That was very clever. A bit rude, but dever. I suppose I’ll have to tell Marcus that the North is a bit more ‘spirited than we thought.”

He turned back toward the woods. ‘T’ll see you at school kids! Don’t stay out too late. You wouldn’t want to canch a cold”

He vanished back into the mist as quickly as he had appeared.

The silence that followed was heavy. Felix let out a breath he had been holding for three minutes. “Did… did he just nice guy’ us?”

“He’s dangerous. Felix.” Elijah said, walking over to help me up. He didn’t fight because he didn’t have to. He just wanted to see what we could do.”

“And he saw it.” I said, looking at the glowing Well “We showed him we can take back our own land”

“Yeah,” Felix said, packing up his laptop. “But now he knows we’re the ones doing it. This secret mission isn’t very secret anymore.”
