The moment Wayne and Harvey heard Annika had been taken in, they rushed to the detention center. As soon as Annika saw them, she asked desperately, “Did you find me a lawyer?”
Wayne’s lips trembled. “Ms. Sargent… no one will take the case.”
Harvey avoided her gaze, and Annika pressed a hand to her forehead with a groan of frustration. “I never even saw Serena! This is all Lydia’s setup. She must have planned it all before I even went to the coast, just waiting for me to walk into her trap.”
To think the one time she acted on impulse, she’d landed herself in here. Annika was drowning in regret.
Wayne picked up where she left off. “Lydia probably isn’t the mastermind. She’s vanished. The police are searching for her everywhere.”
The news that Lydia was missing caught Annika by surprise. A moment later, a horrifying realization dawned, and the color drained from her lips.
Seeing her face turn deathly pale, Harvey quickly tried to reassure her. “Annika, don’t worry. Wayne and I will find a way to get you out. And if we can’t…”
He exchanged a glance with Wayne before continuing slowly, “There’s still Conrad. We believe he won’t just leave you in here.”
At the mention of Conrad’s name, a storm of emotions churned within Annika. Her breathing grew unsteady, her fingernails digging into her palms so hard they could have drawn blood. She knew Harvey was just trying to comfort her. The victim was Serena, the woman Conrad had supposedly loved most. How could she possibly pin her hopes on him? She should be grateful he hadn't shown up to tear her apart himself.
Annika replayed the events in her mind, and the initial calm she’d forced upon herself began to crumble. A genuine fear that this might be the end for her took hold, and a sense of urgency crept in. “Harvey, tell Lana to take good care of Monroe. If I get out, I’ll make sure she’s rewarded.”
