Eli watched everything in silence. Then David’s gaze met hers, only for a moment. And just as Eli had expected, David did not greet her.
At the same time, Josh walked casually from the opposite direction. He had just finished buying something when his eyes caught sight of someone he knew very well. A small smile immediately appeared on his face. Without thinking much about it, he quickened his pace, and as soon as he reached Eli, his arm immediately draped affectionately around the girl’s shoulders.
“Were you going to leave without waiting for me?” he teased.
Eli was slightly surprised before finally smiling. “Josh?”
Josh chuckled softly. “Naomi told me you guys were here. And you really are cheating. Why didn’t you wait for me to have ice cream with you?”
“You were slow,” Grace complained. “Besides, we already wanted to go home.”
“Really, Naomi?” Josh looked sulky. “Come on, I want ice cream too.”
Naomi pouted. “Tomorrow.”
Josh sighed in disappointment, but not long afterward, his gaze shifted toward the group of students from Raven University who were still standing a few steps behind them. He recognized some of their faces, especially since they were members of Raven’s basketball team, which would soon be facing Miller.
“Oh.” Josh raised his hand slightly in greeting. “Didn’t expect to run into you guys here.”
One of them immediately laughed. “Oh, Captain Miller. We’re enjoying ourselves before we have to play against you.”
Josh laughed along. “I see.”
Several others joined in, creating a fairly relaxed atmosphere. But not David. His gaze was instead fixed on Josh’s arm, which was still draped around Eli’s shoulders. His face looked stiff, but he said nothing.
One of the Raven players then looked back and forth between Josh and Eli. “Wait. You two are close?”
Josh raised an eyebrow. “Of course.”
“You’re the one who picked Eli up last night?”
Josh was silent for a moment. “Yes.”
The man immediately laughed. “So it really was you?”
“About what?”
“The handsome basketball player Eli told us about last night.”
“That’s me. I’m Eli’s boyfriend.”
A few seconds passed in silence.
Then one of the Raven players exclaimed, “Seriously?”
The others immediately laughed and cheered. “I told you!”
“So it’s true!”
“That explains it!”
Eli could only stand there, frozen. She did not even know what to say. Meanwhile, Natalie, who had been smiling earlier, now looked silent. Her expression changed slightly, as though Josh’s answer was not what she had expected at all.
David did not laugh either. His gaze was fixed on Josh’s hand that was still wrapped around Eli’s shoulder before shifting to Eli’s face. Something hardened in his eyes, but he remained silent.
Josh, on the other hand, remained calm. “And ... now that you know, I hope you won’t have a problem with it.”
“Of course not,” Natalie replied. “If only you had been honest about it, Eli. There definitely wouldn’t have been any misunderstanding. Right, David?”
