A few days after her conversation with David passed just like that.
Eli tried to stay calm, not look pitiful, and continued going through her days as usual. And whether she realized it or not, those peaceful days from when she first entered college life at Raven University had returned.
Eli had just finished her economics class.
“Looks like I need to buy some new books.” Eli stopped in the corridor and checked the list of books she needed to buy. But she slowly began to hear whispers around her.
When she turned around, she realized people were looking at her strangely.
“So that’s Eli? David’s ex-girlfriend? A girl like her... how dare she play with David?” The voice of a female student could be heard quite clearly from behind a pillar, deliberately loud enough to be heard.
“Looks like it. She was lucky enough to date David, but she chose to get close to Josh too.” Another female student’s voice was no less loud.
Eli furrowed her brows, staring sharply at the two female students, who immediately looked away when their eyes met.
Suddenly, a friend stood in front of Eli.
“Eli! What are you doing here?”
Eli’s brows furrowed deeply. “I... just finished class. What’s wrong?”
“Come here for a moment,” the girl called in a half-whisper, immediately pulling Eli’s arm away from the corridor.
“What’s wrong? What do you want to talk about?” Eli asked in confusion.
“Do you really not know, or are you pretending not to know?” Eli’s friend looked at her with an expression mixed with pity and curiosity.
Eli truly did not understand what Karen, her college friend, was talking about.
Before Eli could respond, a female student from another faculty who had just walked past interrupted in a sarcastic tone. “Who would have thought that a face so innocent could be so good at playing behind someone’s back? No wonder David dumped her immediately without a second thought. What a player!”
Eli immediately turned around, staring at the female student with her chest rising and falling as she held back her anger. “What did you say? Do you know what really happened?”
“Stop pretending. The whole campus already knows what you’re like,” the female student retorted before walking away just like that.
Karen gently patted Eli’s back, which was stiff from holding back her emotions. “Calm down, Eli. Don’t let your emotions get the better of you.”
“Calm down? How can I? They don’t know what really happened. But it seems like they just want to attack me with hurtful words.” Eli’s voice trembled violently as she held back the tightness in her chest. “I have to find out what really happened and how this ridiculous story spread.”
Before Eli left Karen, she made sure to thank her for the information. At least because of her, Eli knew what was happening.
Eli left her friend, but after walking only a few meters, she stopped. She heard her name being mentioned again, this time by a group of female students standing near the vending machine.
