HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 268

The car carrying Althea sped down the road, tailing the ambulance ahead. Her eyes stayed fixed on the flashing lights, her hands wringing together in her lap in a desperate attempt to ease the gnawing anxiety—though it was useless. Her vision blurred with tears that refused to stop. Beside her, a hotel staff member tried, futilely, to calm her.

“Can’t we go any faster?” Althea’s voice broke as she wiped at her wet cheeks. Her gaze never wavered from the ambulance.

“We’ll be there soon, Mrs. Althea,” the staffer reassured gently. If their roles had been reversed, if it had been his child lying injured, he probably would have been screaming too.

“Oh God… Josh…” Althea pressed her hands to her face. “What if he—? This is all my fault. I never should’ve let him go.”

“Please, try to calm yourself, ma’am. I’m certain Josh is strong. The ambulance is headed to the best hospital in Mighatan. The doctors will take good care of him,” the staffer said carefully, measuring every word.

Althea shook her head fiercely. “He’s still just a child! Did you see him? Did you see those injuries? Dear God, he must be in so much pain! How could you expect me to be calm?”

The staffer said nothing, only laying a tentative, comforting hand on her arm. He could hardly blame her. Panic had consumed the woman completely—her fear too raw, too overwhelming.

Her phone rang again. Chase’s name flashed across the screen. She’d forgotten she’d left his call hanging earlier. Althea snatched the phone and answered immediately.

“I’m sorry,” she choked out, still sobbing.

“I already heard. I’m on my way to the hospital.”

“O-okay,” Althea tried to steady her breathing. “But can you hurry, Chase? Please? I’m… I’m so scared.”

“I will,” Chase’s voice was calm, grounding. “I’ll be there as fast as I can. Don’t be afraid—I know Josh is strong. Just hold on a little longer, okay?”

Her chest ached as she pressed a trembling hand against it. “If only I hadn’t let him go out… if only I’d been stricter with him, none of this would’ve happened!”

“Stop blaming yourself!” Chase’s tone was firm, cutting through her spiral. “This isn’t your fault, sweetheart. Do you hear me? None of this is your fault! Josh will pull through. He’s my son—our son. He’s strong.”

“Not yet. I… Josh was in an accident. He’s in critical condition.”

Silence fell between them until…

“How could this happen, Chase?” Riana Miller answered at once, her voice trembling. Chase could tell his mother was stunned by the news he’d delivered.

“I can’t go into the details, Mom. I’m on my way to the hospital.”

“All right,” Daniel interrupted. “Make sure Josh gets the best care. Your mother and I will head to Mighatan. While I’m away from the office, Chris, you’ll handle some affairs at TnC Group. If anything urgent comes up and you need to make decisions, I trust you to decide. You’re an adult and responsible.”

“Yes, Dad,” Chris replied confidently. “I’ll take care of the company matters. Don’t worry about that—focus on Josh. You too, Chase. Try to stay calm. Don’t lose your head.”
