HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 281

“Sit here, Althea,” Felicia said brightly, waving her over. She hadn’t expected Althea to visit her mother’s hospital room. Even so…

“Thank you.” Althea offered a faint smile. “But… are you all right? Do you feel anything unusual?” She asked gently, her question directed at Kate. The older woman shook her head.

“I’m fine. Perhaps I just felt a little dizzy earlier?”

“You’re pushing yourself too hard, Mom. That’s exactly what the nurse said,” Felicia muttered, frowning.

“It doesn’t matter,” Kate replied firmly. “I did it for Josh. But tell me—how is he? Any new updates?”

“For now, not yet. But the worst is over. He’s out of critical danger. Soon they’ll transfer him to a regular ward, once it’s safe enough,” Althea explained.

“Thank God,” Kate exhaled in relief, her lips curving into a grateful smile. “I’m so glad to hear that.” She struggled to sit up, but before Felicia could reach her, Althea—already closer—stepped forward without hesitation, adjusting the pillows and helping Kate sit comfortably.

Kate’s gaze lingered on her, eyes heavy with regret and words she seemed to hold back. Then softly, she said, “You know… the first time I met Josh in Daven’s office, I was shocked. And the more time I spent with him, the more it felt like being taken back to the days when I was raising Daven.”

“Is Josh really that much like him?” Felicia asked, curiosity flickering in her tone.

“Yes. Very much. Josh loves to draw, doesn’t he, Althea?”

“He does, Mrs. Callister. Sometimes at school his drawings are even displayed on the bulletin board,” Althea said, pride touching her smile.

“Tell us more about him at school, Althea. You don’t mind, do you?” Felicia leaned forward, eyes sparkling. “I’m sure my mother would love to hear it too. Right, Mom?”

Kate nodded again, her expectant gaze silently urging Althea to go on. And because Althea’s heart was too soft to resist, she gladly began to share stories about her son.

Especially the ones from school. After all, there was no harm in letting these two women—who, whether she liked it or not, shared a bond with Josh—hear about his little world.

“At school, he asks questions that even his teachers struggle to answer. He loves science, especially anything about space. He says… he wants to be an astronaut one day.”

Kate let out a soft laugh, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. “An astronaut? My goodness, Josh is truly remarkable.”

“He also loves reading stories. He’s already fluent, and often he teaches his friends to read along with him.”

Felicia clapped her hands, her face lighting up with delight. “Oh my God, my nephew is amazing! Do you have any photos or videos of him? Maybe when he performed, or when he read stories to his classmates?”

Without a second thought, Althea pulled out her phone, scrolling through the gallery for pictures and videos of Josh. She handed it over for Felicia and Kate to watch together.

Daven slowed, unsettled by the sudden tension in the air. “Were you… waiting for me?” he asked carefully. Was Chase jealous? But why? He hadn’t even spoken much to Althea.

Chase turned his head, his gaze piercing. “I was waiting for Althea. But now that you’re here… there’s something we need to discuss.”

Daven frowned. “If this is about what happened inside… don’t get the wrong idea. I was only—”

“I don’t care about that,” Chase cut in, his tone icy. “I know my Althea knows where the line is.”

The words hit Daven like a blow—an unmistakable boundary drawn, a reminder of how far he’d been pushed from the place he once held in her life.

“There’s something far more important right now.”

Daven’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”

“The person behind Josh’s accident.”

Daven’s eyes widened, disbelief crashing over him. “What… did you just say?”
