**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke 365**

**Chapter 365**

“That encapsulates everything that has transpired, to the best of my understanding.”

Erick’s voice carried a weight that hung in the air like a dense fog, the gravity of Nora’s accident settling heavily on everyone present. As he finished recounting the tragic event, Selena straightened her posture, diligently brushing away the final remnants of her tears that had begun to dry on her cheeks.

In stark contrast, Silvia had succumbed to her grief, her sobs echoing through the room, each cry a piercing reminder of the harsh reality they all faced—the loss of Nora. Eli, with her small frame trembling, attempted to console her mother, though her own eyes shimmered with unshed tears, reflecting the sadness that enveloped them all.

Selena, however, maintained her distance from the emotional turmoil, appearing composed and collected. Her demeanor was a curious blend of calmness and an occasional flicker of sorrow that danced briefly across her features before fading into a faint, enigmatic smile. It was as if she held a secret just beneath the surface, something that set her apart from the others.

“Thank you for clarifying everything for me,” she said, her voice a soothing whisper that cut through the tension. “So… what are the next steps? Has Nora’s family been informed?”

“They have been notified, Miss Selena,” Erick replied, his tone professional yet tinged with empathy. “It would be best if you returned home for now. We will manage everything here.”

Selena nodded slowly, her mind racing with thoughts. “Oh, but Erick—”

She approached one of the chairs and settled into it, her presence commanding his attention entirely.

“There’s something I wish to discuss,” she began, her voice softening, almost hesitant. “Though… I realize this may not be the most appropriate time.” The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. “It’s regarding Eli’s education.”

Erick blinked, momentarily taken aback by the abrupt change in conversation. Yet, he quickly regained his composure. “Of course, Miss Selena. What specifically would you like to discuss?”

“I’m seeking recommendations for a reputable school,” she stated in a steady, measured tone. “Something nearby Greenvilla. Eli deserves a safe and nurturing environment. I have no desire to place her in a school that lacks diligence.”

Her voice was infused with a maternal warmth, a protective instinct that spoke volumes about her love for her daughter. Yet, beneath that affection lay a calculated intent—Selena was subtly maneuvering herself closer to the inner workings of the Miller family. She was poised, methodical, and unnoticed, biding her time until she could reach her ultimate goal.

And when the moment was right, she would eliminate any obstacle that stood in her way. Including… that little girl.

“Oh, right! School!” Eli piped up, her innocent voice cutting through the tension. “Weren’t we supposed to check out a few today for a survey?”

“Do you have any idea where we are right now, sweetheart?” Selena chuckled lightly, affectionately tapping the tip of Eli’s nose.

“Sorry, Mom,” Eli mumbled, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

“It’s perfectly fine,” Selena reassured her, a gentle smile gracing her lips.

Erick took a moment to gather his thoughts. “I’ll reach out to Mr. Nathan. He may have some recommendations for schools that would be suitable for Miss Eli. Since you’ll be residing in the Greenvilla area for a while, there are quite a few options available.”

Selena offered a gracious nod, her expression serene. “Thank you. I truly appreciate any assistance you can provide.”

“In that case, I’ll excuse myself to make that call.”

“Please do,” she replied, her smile warm yet inscrutable, allowing Erick to retreat. Behind her, Silvia remained, still consumed by her grief, her cries a haunting backdrop to the unfolding events.
