HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 393

**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke**
**Chapter 393**

For a brief moment, Daven found himself enveloped in silence, the weight of his thoughts pressing heavily against him. “Thank you for believing in me, love,” he finally said, his voice a soft murmur, tinged with gratitude.

“Of course,” Althea replied, her tone steady and infused with quiet conviction. “I know you won’t let this drag on.”

A surge of frustration washed over Daven as he spoke again, “Honestly, I’m angry, Althea. I hate being attacked from directions I can’t see. Everything is hitting at once, and it’s overwhelming. I don’t even have time to trace where it’s coming from.” The chaos in his mind felt like a storm, relentless and unforgiving.

“I don’t like seeing you treated that way either,” Althea said gently, her words wrapping around him like a soothing balm. “But I trust you.”

With a heavy heart, Daven closed his eyes, allowing the darkness behind his lids to shield him from the reality he faced. “I wish you were here,” he murmured, the words slipping out before he could guard them.

On the other end of the line, Althea’s smile flickered like a candle in the night. “I know. And I want to come to you.”

“No,” Daven interjected firmly, but his voice softened as he continued, “Don’t.”

“Daven—”

“Let me handle this,” he urged, his tone now imbued with a gentleness that belied the turmoil inside him. “I don’t want you caught in the middle of this chaos.”

Althea sighed, a sound filled with both concern and determination. “I just want to help.”

“You already are,” Daven reassured her, the sincerity in his voice unmistakable. “Just calling me right now is enough.”

“But… I miss you,” she confessed, her voice laced with a longing that resonated deeply within him.

A wide smile broke across Daven’s face, a rare moment of joy amidst the storm. “God, I thought the longing was only on my side. So you miss me too?”

“How could I not?” Althea grumbled playfully, a hint of exasperation threading through her words. “Can’t I come to you?”

“What about Josh and Grace?” Daven countered, his mind racing with the implications of her presence.

Althea fell silent, the weight of her responsibilities hanging heavily in the air.

“I promise I’ll be home in two days,” Daven said carefully, each word chosen with the utmost thought. “I love it when you come with me on overseas trips—like we used to, turning work into a little vacation. But this time is different, love. I’d rather you wait for me at home.”

Althea’s breath was audible, a soft surrender. “Alright. I won’t go anywhere. I’ll wait for you.”

Daven opened his eyes, relief washing over him. “I know.”

They lingered in silence, not because there was nothing left to say, but because the stillness between them felt like a comforting embrace, a moment of shared understanding amidst the chaos.

“Do you remember,” Althea finally broke the silence, her voice soft and reminiscent, “the first time you told me business wasn’t just about numbers?”

Daven’s smile deepened, recalling that pivotal moment. “I said business is about the people you protect.”

“And now,” Althea continued, her voice imbued with pride, “I see you doing exactly that. You’re protecting everything you’ve built—more than just a company.”

Daven exhaled slowly, the weight of her words settling in. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m strong enough.”

“You don’t have to be strong all the time,” Althea replied with quiet certainty, her faith in him unwavering. “You must keep moving forward. And I believe you will.”

This time, Daven’s smile widened, a genuine warmth blooming within him. “Hearing your voice helps more than you realize.”

“I’ll keep calling,” Althea promised, her determination clear. “Until you tell me everything’s alright.”
