HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 398

**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke**
**Chapter 398**

“Oh my God—what the hell is this?”

Cale slammed the brown folder shut with a force that echoed in the temporary archive room of Callister Group. His fingers lingered on the corner of the last page, as if he could somehow wish the contents away or convince himself that he had misread the damning information. The room was enveloped in an eerie silence, punctuated only by the soft, monotonous hum of the air conditioner, which seemed to mock his growing anxiety. He raked a hand through his hair, his disbelief palpable, a storm of confusion swirling in his mind.

“This doesn’t make any sense,” he muttered under his breath, trying to process the implications of what he had just uncovered.

With a sense of dread, he opened another folder, his heart racing. The same documents stared back at him, but in a different format. The dates were alarmingly close, and the signatures—oh, those signatures—had no business being there. It was as if he had stumbled upon a sinister pattern lurking just beneath the surface, subtle yet devastating in its ramifications.

“If this is real…” Cale exhaled a long, shaky breath, the weight of the discovery settling heavily on his shoulders.

He turned his gaze toward the IT staff member who stood near the door, his posture tense, as if anticipating the worst. Beside him was an administrative staffer, visibly anxious, tasked with overseeing the files Cale had requested. A few others hovered nearby, ensuring that nothing escaped his scrutiny this time.

“Are you absolutely certain these files were never synced to the main server?” Cale demanded, his voice steady but laced with urgency.

“Absolutely, Mr. Miller,” the IT staff member replied, his tone quick and firm. “I’ve never encountered this data before. And the admin team didn’t input it either, right?”

“That’s correct,” the admin staffer interjected, his voice trembling slightly. “This is the first time I’ve seen these documents. But… how did you even find them?”

A smirk played at the corners of Cale’s lips, his sharp gaze locking onto the man, who suddenly looked down, as if trying to conceal a secret. “Anything that’s hidden will eventually be found,” he said, his tone casual yet carrying an unmistakable weight of warning. He gave the man’s shoulder a light pat—an outwardly friendly gesture, but one that held a clear threat. “And it’s very possible all of this was deliberately separated so it would never be discovered.”

With a sense of urgency, he pulled out his phone, his fingers flying over the screen as he dialed a number that was etched into his memory.

“Daven,” he said the moment the call connected, his voice low and urgent. “Where are you right now?”

“Still in JiangShe,” Daven replied, his tone calm, but Cale could sense the tension beneath it. “What’s going on?”

“There’s something you need to see for yourself,” Cale said, cutting straight to the point. “And honestly—I’m shocked.”

A brief silence followed, thick with anticipation. “About what?”

“Internal tax reports. Off-project fund flows based on the data you provided. Several projects were unilaterally canceled, accompanied by demands for compensation.” Cale lowered his voice, urgency creeping in. “These documents weren’t where they should’ve been. If I hadn’t stumbled upon them by chance, they might have remained buried forever.”
