HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 642

“No.”

“Because this story… it’s long. And it’ll take your sleep with it.”

“That’s fine,” Lydia replied quickly. “I’m used to staying up late.”

Cale smiled faintly. “Alright… if that’s what you want.” He straightened slightly, his expression shifting—more seriously now. “And like I said earlier… don’t interrupt me when I start talking about something I’d rather forget.”

The phone kept ringing, its sharp tone cutting through a sleep that hadn’t even settled properly. Lydia let out a soft groan, her face still half-buried in the pillow as her hand fumbled blindly across the nightstand. She had no intention of answering it—especially after a night that had drained her, both physically and… emotionally.

But the ring wouldn’t stop.

With a heavy breath, Lydia cracked one eye open and reached for her phone, her movements slow and reluctant. She was just about to decline the call… until the name on the screen registered.

Althea.

Just like that, the drowsiness vanished.

Lydia pushed herself up immediately, instinctively glancing at her side. Cale was still lying there, his face calm in sleep—so peaceful it made her hesitate. The last thing she wanted was to wake him. For a moment, she simply watched him… then quietly slipped out of bed, moving away before answering the call.

“Hello?” Her voice was still slightly hoarse.

“Lydia! You finally picked up!” Althea’s voice came through, equal parts relief and panic. “I’ve been trying to reach you for a while now.”

Lydia frowned faintly, stopping near the window. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“Andrew’s been trying to contact you too,” Althea continued quickly. “He said you got back earlier than planned, and no one’s been able to reach either of you since. I got worried.”

Lydia let out a soft sigh, then chuckled under her breath. “Oh, that’s all?”

“‘That’s all’?” Althea echoed, disbelief clear in her tone. “I even heard you two might have… had a bit of a disagreement?”

Lydia covered her mouth, stifling a laugh that almost slipped out louder. She cast a quick glance toward the bedroom, making sure Cale was still undisturbed.

“Althea,” she said softly, amusement lacing her voice, “Cale and I arguing is pretty normal.”

“Yes, but—”

“You should know that by now,” Lydia cut in lightly. “We’re fine. Really.”

There was a brief silence on the other end before Althea let out a long breath. “Are you sure?”

“Very sure.”

“Alright…” Althea’s tone softened at last. “I just don’t want anything happening while you’re so far away.”

A small smile curved Lydia’s lips as she leaned lightly against the window. “Nothing’s going to happen. You worry too much.”

“Because I care.”

“I know. And I really appreciate that.”

A short pause followed, the tension easing into something lighter.

“So, how are things over there?” Lydia asked after a moment. “Chase isn’t giving you a hard time, is he?”

Althea let out a soft laugh. “Quite the opposite. He’s way too active for a two-month-old. I’m starting to think he never actually gets tired.”

Lydia laughed along, the sound light and genuine. “That just means he’s healthy. You know how babies are when they’re growing well, right?”

“Of course.”

Lydia shifted, settling comfortably against the sofa. “What about Grace and Josh?”

“Grace is calmer,” Althea said. “She spends most of her time reading. And… Josh is doing well too. He won his tournament yesterday. Though he was a little disappointed you couldn’t be there to see it.”

“I’m not surprised about Josh,” Lydia replied with a small smile. “I miss him and Grace too, but… Berlin’s been quite enjoyable.” She let out a soft laugh.

“Mm-hmm, I can imagine. Enjoy your time there,” Althea teased. “I think the kids are finally getting used to having you around at home.”
