Althea smiled brightly. “You’re right. That’s exactly why I love this camping idea so much.”
“You don’t love the person who came up with the idea?” Daven asked, pointing at himself.
Althea clicked her tongue. “Why should I?”
“So you don’t love me anymore?” Daven stared at her in disbelief. “Really?”
“Good grief, Daven,” Althea warned awkwardly. She was worried that other shoppers might have heard what he had just said. “Could you stop saying random things?”
“I’m not saying random things,” the man replied with a mournful expression. “So... you really don’t love me anymore.”
“Isn’t the question ‘Do you love me?’ usually something a woman asks her boyfriend or husband?” Althea grumbled irritably. “So why are you the one asking it?”
Daven grinned broadly. “Let’s just say that, for today, I’ve claimed ownership of that question.”
“There’s no such thing.”
Daven burst out laughing.
After nearly two hours of wandering around the supermarket, they had finally purchased everything they needed. Their cart was almost overflowing, and they quickly completed the payment before loading all the supplies into the car.
Althea let out a relieved sigh as she adjusted the strap of her shoulder bag. She assumed they would head straight home to begin packing, considering that evening was already approaching.
However, on the drive back, Daven did not take the route toward the Miller residence. Instead, he headed in a different direction, causing Althea, who had been quietly enjoying the ride, to ask, “Where... are we going?”
“That’s why, before we go back home and get busy again with the children and exhausting work, I want to take my beloved wife out for a simple dinner first.”
Althea, who had initially felt confused and surprised, instantly felt her cheeks grow warm as a blush slowly spread across her face upon hearing the reason that came from her husband’s lips. She had not expected that amid all the busyness and complicated family matters currently unfolding, Daven was still thinking about their relationship in such a sweet way.
“You’re always full of unexpected surprises, Daven,” Althea whispered softly. She turned her face toward the window to hide the bashful smile that continued to spread across her lips.
Because of that, Daven reached over and took his wife’s hand without hesitation. He gently stroked it and placed a brief kiss on the back of Althea’s hand. Meanwhile, his other hand remained on the steering wheel, focused on keeping the car steady.
Their journey eventually came to a stop in front of a small, quiet restaurant with a classic atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city center. And for the first time in a long while, the two of them were finally able to enjoy a real date. A personal space completely free from the interruptions of children’s cries or the ringing of work-related phone calls.
A waiter welcomed them warmly and led them to a table that Daven had reserved in advance. Althea was genuinely surprised that Daven had planned all of this.
