HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 830

“Don’t be so nervous,” Chris warned.

Naomi immediately turned to look at him. “I’m not nervous.”

“Then why have you been quiet ever since we got in the car?”

Naomi clicked her tongue in annoyance. Sharing a car with Chris had been the worst idea. Ever since the man arrived at Cale’s house, Naomi’s mood had been thrown into chaos. Chris teased her more often, played pranks on her, and occasionally pushed her into raising her voice because of their never-ending arguments.

“I just don’t feel like talking.”

Chris merely nodded as if he accepted that answer. Yet from the look in his eyes, it was obvious he didn’t believe her.

“I’m serious.” Chris pulled a fruit-flavored candy from his pocket and held it out to her. “You don’t need to be that nervous.”

At his core, Chris was considerate. But for some reason, whenever he was dealing with Naomi, he became irritating. Even so, Naomi didn’t refuse the candy he offered.

“Before events like this, Mr. Cale held one at one of the Devereux family’s large halls.”

“Your family,” Chris replied flatly.

“I don’t know.” Naomi shrugged. “I know that’s my family name, but... I never expected there to be so much behind that name.”

“It doesn’t matter. But Cale is part of the Devereux family too, right? Even so, he could walk away from all of it without caring what happened. If you hadn’t met him, have you ever thought about how long he would have kept taking responsibility?”

Chris’s question left Naomi stunned.

“You don’t need to feel burdened. He’s the type of person who likes carrying burdens,” Chris remarked.

Without realizing it, Naomi gently brushed the tattoo on her arm. This time, she had no intention of hiding it.

That night, she wore a dark blue gown that wasn’t flashy, but that very simplicity made it elegant. The design was simple, with an open neckline that gracefully revealed her shoulders and collarbones without being excessive.

The upper part of the gown fit her body perfectly, then fell naturally along her curves before softly flaring out to touch the floor. At the waist was a large bow detail, the only striking ornament on the dress.

Her long black hair was left loose in soft waves over her shoulders. Without excessive jewelry and wearing only light makeup that highlighted her natural beauty, Naomi looked different that night.

“I kept certain things to myself when Mrs. Lydia asked.”

They looked at each other.

The passing streetlights outside the window cast faint reflections across their faces. For a moment, the atmosphere inside the car felt slightly more tense than before.

“I could have told her everything,” Naomi continued. “I could have told her I saw the injuries on her face. I could have told her how she begged you not to tell anyone.”

Chris’s expression gradually changed.

“But I didn’t.” Naomi stared straight ahead.

For some reason, the more she thought about it, the more annoyed she felt. Maybe it was because trust had never been something she gave easily. And when she finally chose to respect someone’s request, it was not pleasant when that person seemed not to trust her in return.

“I didn’t say anything. I respected your decision.” Her voice sounded quieter than before. “And what did I get in return?”

Chris did not answer immediately. And that silence only made Naomi more convinced that the man beside her was hiding something.
