Then Chris’s lips touched hers. Briefly. Truly briefly. But it was enough to make Naomi’s world stop spinning.
When Chris pulled away, both of them fell silent.
Naomi did not even realize she had been holding her breath. Her eyes widened. Her thoughts were in disarray. And for the first time since she had known him, she saw Chris lose the composure he had always possessed.
The man looked just as shocked as she was.
As though he had only just realized what he had done.
Until finally, Chris let out a long breath and rested his forehead against Naomi’s.
“Good heavens,” he said, his voice trembling.
For quite a while, Naomi simply let all of this happen to her. She was still busy trying to steady her thoughts and calm the frantic beating of her heart.
When the man finally lifted his gaze, looking at Naomi intently and trying to regain control of himself.
“Do you know how I felt during the entire drive here?”
Naomi fell silent.
Chris chuckled softly. “I just realized that I hate one thing.” His gaze never left Naomi. “The thought of you being with someone else.”
Naomi’s heart began pounding again.
“I don’t like imagining it.” Chris’s voice grew quieter. “I really don’t.” He shook his head slightly, as though he was still trying to understand himself.
“Maybe I’m not in love with you yet.”
The words made Naomi tense slightly, and Chris continued before she could think too much about them.
“I’m not even sure I like you enough to use that word.” A faint smile appeared on his face. “But I know one thing.”
“Not as a fake fiancé or a man who’s playing around. But as someone who wants to try moving forward with you.”
Naomi remained silent.
Up until that moment, her mind had not managed to catch up with everything that had just happened. That brief kiss. Chris’s confession. The way the man looked at her as though, for the first time, there were no more jokes or pretenses between them.
Her heart was still beating far too fast. And what made Naomi most uncomfortable was the fact that she did not know which part she was supposed to reject.
“I’m not asking for your answer tonight.” Chris smiled faintly, though his gaze remained fixed on her. “I just want you to know.”
He gently stroked the top of Naomi’s head.
“From now on, if there’s another man who wants to get close to you...” Chris let out a soft breath before chuckling quietly.
“I think I’ll be the biggest problem they have to deal with.”
