What Chris had just said left Naomi speechless. She blinked once, then blinked again. Her brain suddenly seemed incapable of functioning after hearing that casual statement.
"What?" Naomi repeated.
Chris rested his elbow on the armrest, completely unconcerned by his own request. "A date, Naomi. The two of us go out together after this."
"I know what that word means," Naomi replied after managing to recover from her surprise.
"That's good, then. So? Do you agree?"
"I just didn't expect you to say it as casually as if you were asking me to grab coffee around town," Naomi protested, staring at Chris in disbelief.
A faint smile appeared at the corner of Chris's lips. "I've been thinking about it all night. So this isn't a spontaneous invitation."
Naomi immediately turned her face toward the window, hiding the blush that had suddenly appeared on her cheeks. Internally, she grumbled nonstop. This man was truly skilled at turning her emotions upside down. Last night, he had made it impossible for her to sleep. This morning, he acted as though nothing had happened at the breakfast table. And now, he was suddenly throwing out sweet words without a care in the world.
"I haven't given you an answer yet," Naomi murmured softly, still looking out at the road beyond the window.
"I hope it's not a rejection," Chris replied casually.
Naomi clicked her tongue softly, while Chris merely chuckled. Fortunately, the man had enough self-awareness not to keep cornering her and allowed silence to settle between them for the remainder of the drive to the first university.
The first university they visited stood prominently in the northern area of Carrington Bay. Its complex featured modern buildings dominated by contemporary architecture. The front grounds were spacious, filled with students moving about with their own activities. Some carried laptops, while others were busy discussing group projects beneath the trees.
Naomi stepped out of the car and tilted her head up, studying the tall building before her. A strange feeling suddenly settled in her chest. It had been a very long time since she had thought about the future. For years, her only focus had been how to survive each day and escape from danger.
Standing in an academic environment like this made her realize that her life had now changed. There was a real future here, one worth planning for and striving toward.
"So? Do you like it?" asked Chris, who was now standing beside her.
Naomi glanced at him briefly. "I don't know yet. I've only seen the front of it."
"Good," Chris replied, slipping both hands into his pockets. "At least you're smart enough not to choose a university just because the building façade looks nice."
Chris burst out laughing.
For Naomi, this was the first time she had seen a different side of Chris. When talking about things he truly understood, the man seemed different. More focused, more mature, and far more attractive than the version of himself he usually showed when teasing her.
The second university gave a completely opposite impression. Its green spaces were much larger, towering trees shaded the walkways, and its old stone buildings created a warm, calming atmosphere. However, this was where their disagreement began.
"I think I'll major in Economics," Naomi said as they walked through the central garden.
"Don't," Chris cut in immediately.
Naomi stopped in her tracks and turned to him sharply. "Why? I like the subject."
"Economics is too broad if you don't yet know what specialization you want to pursue. You've only read a few textbooks and think it'll be the same as studying it in university," Chris explained in a calm but firm tone.
Naomi glared at him irritably, feeling as though he was dismissing her choice. "Then what major do you think suits me, Mr. Observer?"
