Before the doctor could respond, the sound of footsteps coming through the smoke grew clearer. It wasn't one or two people, but a group moving swiftly down the corridor.
Jasper raised his left hand in a signal. "Two of you, with me."
Two guards immediately stepped forward.
"The other four stay with Mrs. Lydia. Don't leave them for even a second."
"Yes, sir."
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Another volley of gunfire split the air.
Sparks flew as several bullets slammed into the corner of the concrete wall directly in front of them. Jasper returned fire with three short, measured shots.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
One of the men at the end of the corridor immediately collapsed. A cry of pain echoed throughout the building.
"Keep moving!"
"Don't let them get through!"
Voices shouted over one another, mixed with the constant crackle of radio communications filling the air. Jasper advanced one step at a time, continuing to fire as he created an opening for the doctor and Lydia.
"Just a little farther," he said, his breathing beginning to grow heavier. "The service corridor is only a few meters away."
At that moment, the radio clipped to one of the guards' shoulders suddenly blared.
"All units! All units!"
The man's voice on the other end was filled with panic.
"The leader of the Obsidian Circle has broken through the front gate!"
Everyone seemed to freeze.
Lydia, who had been forcing herself to keep walking, suddenly stopped. Her heart pounded violently.
The leader...
The Obsidian Circle...
She needed no further explanation. There was only one person who led that organization.
Jasper did not flinch in the slightest. His gaze remained fixed on Lydia, as though amid the chaos consuming the building, her safety was the only thing that mattered to him.
"If I take you to him now," he said, briefly glancing toward the corridor filled with the smoke of gunpowder. The exchange of gunfire was growing closer, punctuated by people shouting orders to one another.
"You could be shot before you even get the chance to see him."
Lydia clenched her hands so tightly that her nails dug into her palms.
"But he..."
"I know." For the first time, Jasper cut Lydia off. His voice was neither raised nor forceful. Yet there was a firmness to it that Lydia had never heard from him before.
Their eyes met. Amid the alarm that continued to wail without end, Jasper remained standing between Lydia and the corridor where bullets were still flying, as though without realizing it, he had made his own body the barrier protecting her.
"Today, I will reunite you with him."
Those words left Lydia speechless.
She tried to read the expression on the man's face. Over the past few days, Jasper had always been a mystery. He had never treated her as cruelly as Silas's men had, but neither had he ever done enough to make Lydia trust him.
But at this moment, the man was no longer speaking like a subordinate carrying out orders. He sounded like someone who had already made up his mind.
