One of his front teeth.
The silence that followed was far more terrifying than the sound of the punch itself. No one spoke. Even Silas's men, who had been holding their weapons at the ready from the beginning, could only stare at the small object on the floor with tense expressions.
Silas raised a hand and touched the split corner of his mouth. His tongue slowly swept across the gap now left inside his mouth. His gaze dropped briefly to the tooth lying on the floor before lifting again to meet Cale's.
For the first time, the smile on his face disappeared completely. On the other hand, the corner of Cale's mouth lifted ever so slightly. It was not a smile of victory, nor was it one of mockery. It was the cold satisfaction of finally silencing the mouth that had refused to stop talking.
"I warned you." Cale's voice was low and calm. "When you talk too much," his gaze remained locked on Silas, "there's usually a price to pay."
Silas fell silent for several seconds. Then his shoulders began to tremble slightly. He laughed. It started quietly, then gradually became clearer even as blood continued to flow from between his lips.
"Is that so?"
He spat onto the floor again. This time, far more blood came out. "You think you've won... over one tooth?"
Using one hand to brace himself against the floor, Silas slowly rose to his feet. His movements were indeed slower than before, yet his eyes were once again filled with a confidence that made Vincent frown. The man didn't look like someone who had just lost a fight.
"You've always been exceptional," he murmured quietly. "In a one-on-one fight." His gaze shifted past Cale's shoulder. "Unfortunately..."
The sentence wasn't finished when the sound of metal scraping against metal echoed from every corner of the corridor.
Click.
One.
Silas slowly spread his arms, as though presenting the masterpiece he was most proud of. "You were too focused on me."
He smiled again, though now it looked lopsided because of the missing tooth. "And you forgot one thing." A quiet laugh escaped him once more. "Did you count how many people have been waiting behind you?"
Cale's gaze didn't shift in the slightest. His eyes remained locked on Silas, as though the dozens of rifles now aimed at him were nothing more than an insignificant backdrop, unworthy of drawing his attention. The faint smirk on his face slowly faded, replaced by a calmness that made several of Silas's men begin exchanging uneasy glances.
They had seen people afraid. They had seen people in despair. But they had never seen someone remain that calm... while dozens of rifle barrels were trained on every part of his body.
The faint smirk on Cale's face gradually disappeared. The satisfaction of silencing Silas's mouth lasted only a moment before it was replaced once again by an almost flawless calm. His gaze remained fixed on the man before him, completely undisturbed by the dozens of rifle barrels now aimed at every part of his body.
From the moment he had first entered the house, he had already been aware of their presence: the shadows behind the pillars. The breaths deliberately held behind the doors. The gun barrels that occasionally caught the light from the corridor. And the men on the second floor, already prepared to fire.
